Old rider
It's the Cinema House taken from Barkers Pool with the Gaumont just visible on the right. To me the interesting thing is the name "Barkers Pool". I used to wonder how this area in front of the City Hall got its name until I read something about it. As we all appreciate medieval towns were filthy, smelly, disease ridden places where the residents tipped all there rubbish in the road. A public spirited gentleman known as Mr Barker had a pool built there. Once a month warnings were given then the water was released from Mr Barker's pool to run down the streets of the town and flush away the waste and clean the streets of medieval Sheffield. The pool is long gone but the name Barkers Pool remains.
