John
Tapton Secondary Modern School officially opened on 5th January 1960 with 660 pupils but students started school there after the summer holidays in 1959 The pupils came from 3 local schools who lost their senior school to provide the pupils. These 3 schools, Springfield County, Nethergreen, and Crookes Endowed became Junior schools. The Headmaster was Mr Sam North and the Deputy head was Mr Cyril May and there were three other specialist teachers and eighteen form teachers. The school has now been torn down and replaced with a new one further up the street, but I hope many old students will remember the old school with fond memories. My site at http://www.johnmather.com/tapton/start.htm has a number of class photos if anyone is interested
