Prison Record

Afternoon all,

I have included with this post an edited image from Wakefield Prison in 1899. My question is this: In the heading of 'Religion & Birthplace' What are the initials for religion and what do they mean. They look like BH or CH, any ideas anyone?

...but then it also looks like an upper case 'C'.

So maybe it is 'Ch', as a slightly unusual abbreviation for Church of England. Unless they are all 'Chapel' (but that sounds like a Welsh usage of the term).

It is certainly C, here are two side by side.

Could it be Ch ? Perhaps they identified themselves generally as "Christian", whereas the Catholic was being more specific.

I think Ch = Church of England (especially as most people seem to be this); RC = Roman Catholic; as in this:

http://www.theoriginalrecord.com/database/ebooks/list/unthank/9

"These abbreviations are used in the names of schools: B., British; Bd., Board; Ch., Church of England; N., National; P., Parochial; R. C., Roman Catholic; U., Poor Law Union; W., Wesleyan Methodist."

Hope this helps :-)
