What Can You Tell Us About This Photograph Of Sheffield City Centre ?

As already said. Junction of High St,,Church St,, Fargate.

The white railings in front of Boots, the white railings on the far right & where the picture is taken from, are all places where there were entrances to a subway system under Fargate & Church Street. This included an entrance to Boots basement floor, this floor is not open to the public any more.

The corner on the far right at the time of this picture was the gas board showrooms, before this building was built, it used to be the site of Cole Brothers department store. "Cole's Corner"

There do seem to be a few lights hanging about on various buildings and two seemingly hanging from the sky ...

Photo taken 20th November 1974. It was Wednesday.

According to Wiki, Fargate became a pedestrian precinct in 1973, so the vehicles in the photo are either parked, or loading.

Traffic on Fargate which is now a pedestrian precinct.

Oh well .......it must be good to see round corners !!

Seriously though, it is a lot later then I thought , I thought it was '60's picture because of the Comma type van & the Escort car.

If you zoom in on the image, the "Road Closed" sign can be seen.

November would be right, Christmas lights are up, plenty of festooning between lamp posts. I would guess the Comma van belongs to Post Office Telephones, they had loads of them around that time.

Surely, it's a "Commer" van?

It's parked so it's probably a full stop. :)

Looks like the subway's still there with a basement entrance to Boots. Once Fargate was pedestrianized the subway was filled with concrete.
