Dear Edmund,

Thank you so much for the above.

My grandfather William Beresford Parkin married Lily Florence Lovatt from Ashbourne

They moved to London, initially Farringdon and later to Camberwell.

In the 1920s my grandfather was writing regular articles in a magazine for gramophone buffs “ The Sound Wave”. He also had music published.

Whilst I had traced Thomas and Clara to 52 Alderson Road in 1871 and Clara’s birth possibly in 1848 in Eccleshall B. Vol.XXll page 107 (7?), I have been unable to trace, with certainty, my great grandfather, the said Thomas, back further than his marriage to Clara.

If you are able unearth anything further back for Thomas, it would be greatly appreciated

Richard

Hi Richard

Have you got the marriage certificate for Thomas Parkin and Clara Birks?

From freebmd.org

Thomas Parkin/ Clara Birks Sep 1870 Ecclesall B 9c 260

This will show the name and occupation of Thomas Parkin's father and maybe other family members as witnesses. That info will help in the search to go back further.

Hi Edmund and Suesi,

I am very grateful for your help.

I had last done some research on my Sheffield ancestors in 2009 and looking through the paperwork I collected then, I have found a copy of Thomas Parkin and Clara Birks marriage Cert, which I obtained on a visit to Sheffield in May 2009.

This shows Thomas's father as William Parkin and his residence at time of marriage as 87 Stafford Street Sheffield. Thomas's sister Annie Elizabeth was a witness.

Thus with the copy censuses you have kindly supplied Edmund, I think I can safely assume that William and Mary Parkin are my great, great grandparents.

However, given that the first general census was the one of 1841, I guess that it will be difficult to trace back further, although there may be other descendants of the children of Thomas and Clara who might read this and have information which they would be willing to share.

Again very many thanks for your help

Richard Parkin
