How The North Was Built

Recommended Posts

Just watched on TV part one of Robson Green's documentary showing how the north of England contributed to the Industrial Revolution. The history of steelmaking in Sheffield took up about half of the one hour show, then shipbuilding on the Tyne, growth of the unions and the demise of the collieries. It featured scenes and interviews all around Sheffield; Abbeydale Works, the miners strike, Peter Gibbon a grinder, Kathleen Roberts a 92 year old former steelworker, scenes from Sheffield United v Bury 1902 and an interview with Jack Charlton.

I enjoyed it because it was down-to-earth, grass roots stuff seen through the eyes of working people. Not sure how old it was, it must have been on UK television?

I am awaiting the referendum when the North will be asked if it wants independence from the South of England! <_<
