I lived on Crookesmoor Rd and went there from age 5-8, 1960-1963 till we moved to Sharrow.

Can only remember teacher Mrs Hornsey and the head Mr Oakes.

Other classmates

Susan Buxton

Paula Backhouse

Andrew Peters

Magda Rupik

I remember Mum taking me to school after the 1962 storm and there were chimney pots and slates smashed on the pavement.

My older sister also went there 1954-1960?, then went onto the newly opened Myers Grove.

The Twins? - would that be the Metcalfes? used to live opposite the church hall that also became famous as The Ark disco - I am sure one, or both of the twins ran the Ark - they had a younger brother called Tim who was about our age - I think one of the twins names was Paul

Lucy Bryan - the Vicars daughter - and her sister Brenda

Peter & Paul Metcalfe, Ann Glossop, Michael Jackson and few others ran the Ark for the benefit of St. Nathaniels Church. Peter, Paul , Ann & Neville Johnson were members of the Church Boys and Church Girls Brigade based there. The vicar was Father Bryan and Lucy & Brenda Bryan were his twin daughters.

Derek,

I used to live at No.9 Cross Addy Street with my sister Sharon and parents Dennis and Dorean. We were 3 doors away from you and 2 doors away from the Kirk's (Len & Anne). When we were kids I remember we used to play subbuttio competitions in your front room. I went with you to town and bought my first team (using you as advisor) from Sugg's, my dad went mad as they cost 1 shilling and 3 pennies!!!

I was the one who had a crash on a push bike at the junction between Arthur Street and Springvale Road in 1964 racing Steve Naylor round the block. It left me in a coma for 5 days with a fractured skull and a brain Haemorrhage.

Reading some of the posts I can shed some light on some of the people and places. I knocked about with Steven Nailor, Rodney Smith and Cecil Spencer. The Naylor's lived at the top of our 'yard' the kids were June, Les, Brian, Steven, Graham, Andrea and Joanne.

The last I heard Steven moved to Australia. Unfortunately I heard that Brian died of cancer as did his dad Bob. I saw Graham working in a council craft centre for people with learning difficulties on Peter Street about 1980/81. Andréa lived with us on and off for many years while her mum and dad looked after Joanne who was in and out of hospital having her legs broken and reset to correct a twist. They were all a fabulous family.

I don't know the final story but in about 1998/99 we were driving past the old Infirmary Hospital and we saw flowers and a slogan painted on the wall saying "Pigs killed Cecil Spencer". I made some enquiries and was told he was killed on a car chase with the police. I presume this was the same Cecil Spencer as it is not a common name.

Someone mentioned Cheryl Goldthorpe, she was the daughter of the corner shop owners Doug and Winney (I think). On the other street corner it was Wards shop and Marriot’s transport and just down Springvale Road there was a newsagents called Don's. At the bottom junction of SAddy Street and Springvale road there was the Upperthorpe swimming baths, the wash house, Library, the Oxford Cinima and the chippy. A few other people you may remember were Andrew Wallace and Graham Cogin, they were my age (born 1952) and lived on Addy street near David Belk.

Hope this fills some of the gaps and questions posted. I have added a photograph of myself and Sharon from way back then plus a photo of me a few years later and a photo of the 'Tip' we used to play on, mainly sliding down the banks on cardboard and making throwing arrows launched with string and playing footy on the ash pitch.

Hi there,

I happened on this site just by chance last week and, unlike others, I seemed to have little or no memories of my childhood in Addy Street or my time at Crookesmoor Junior School (I left in 1959). During the last week the "fog" has lifted a little and I am beginning to put a few faces to names mentioned so I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for reminding me of people and places from all those years ago. However, I have to say that the biggest shock was to see that others remembered my name, if not me. Hopefully, this was because my parents ran the corner shop and not because I was truly awful but you don't have to answer that!

My mum and dad were John and Winnie not Doug and Winnie but my dad's middle name was Douglas and I now seem to recall that people did sometimes call him Doug. As for the previous entry, I remembered the face of that little boy immediately but sadly not his name.

Keep up the good work.

Regards Chez.

I lived on Crooksmoor Road from 1949 to 1960 I am the 5th of the 7 children of Frost family. I am interested in finding out more about Upperthorpe and the Frost family. Unfortunately our parents both died before I became interested in family history, my older siblings have given me what help they can, but there is a gap in my history of the Frost's, I know that the Fish and Chip shop on Daniel Hill Street and the shop next door were run by my fathers brother and sister I know the names of their children but very little else. Any information would be useful on both topics. From a nervous first timer Marian

hello Marian,

Welcome to the site!

I have been doing a bit of rootling around (I just can't stop myself) and came up with the following - is any of this familiar?...

White's 1919/20 Directory

There are two fish friers on Daniel Hill Street:

93 - Brookfield Alfd dried fish dealr

78 - Lindley William fried fish dealr

...no Frosts at that date, but, there are these burials in Walkley cemetery:

Burials in Walkley Cemetery

Burial Register

grave F246 (Plan F2, unrecorded MI)

FROST Lucy 8 Jul 1912 93 Daniel Hill St. 36

FROST George Henry 27 Aug 1935 459 Main Rd., Darnall

[name/date of burial/address or place where death occurred/age]

...providing a link with no. 93.

Also, searching for the marriage of this couple (assuming they are a couple)...

GRO Marriages DEC Qtr 1896

FROST George Henry Sheffield 9c 779

LINDLEY Lucy Sheffield 9c 779

..suggesting a link with the other chippy!

This George Henry FROST was a coal miner in 1901, and in 1881 his father, George, was a slack washer (born in Buckinghamshire).

Hugh :)

Thank both of you for your words of kindness.

I should have put Daniel Hill (no Street) sorry  My uncle and aunts names were Ernest Frost and Hilda Cornthwaite nee Frost. Both shops were at the bottom of Daniel Hill close to the Library and swimming baths

Dad worked in the Steel Works but used to peel potatoes behind the ‘chippie’ after his long shift at work, don't remember much about this, thank goodness for older siblings.

My father and grand fathers name was Alfred. I got copy of father’s birth certificate, and from the information gained from that I was then able to get a copy of my Grandfathers marriage certificate finding out from that that his father was William.

My grandfather worked in the mines when my father was born and strangely my maternal grandmother was a Lindley or Linley. It’s a minefield isn’t it?

I remember a Brian Naylor and Trevor Dawson my childhood sweetheart.

Trevor used to bring his little dog for walkies on the tip and I would bring our alsation that was built like a donkey, he was far too powerful for me, the dog that is not Trevor.

I was only 12 at the time but I think Trevor got fedup of my dog eating his dog.

I also remember Michael Wigfall and Trevor Cotteral?
