'stop Me & Buy One' Bikes: Can You Help?

Recommended Posts

Evening all! I'm currently involved in a bit of 'reconstructive history', building a replica of one of those backwards tricycles with the box on the front, famous for selling ice-cream in years gone by. In the early 1900's they were quite common and were used for deliveries and other things as well as ice-cream.

I was wondering if anyone has any photograps they could post or other information they could give me. I know these bikes are still made, but I want mine to look as vintage as possible, so I'm building it out of bits of old bicycles scavenged from car boot sales, autojumbles and the local tip.

If I recall, the 'Stop me and Buy One' were only 'Wall's ice cream bikes and I used to see them in the Shirecliffe area in the late '50s. I wonder where the salesmen got there 'wares' from as I don't know of a 'Wall's' ice cream place in Sheffield.
