Tram Depot Holme Lane Hillsborough

Holme Lane was a horse tram depot for the nearby terminus, however i believe it was substantially rebuilt for the electric era, so may not be the same building at all really.

Can anyone tell me when it opened? Was it before electric trams and if not where did the Horse Trams go?

According to Kenneth Gandy's excellent book "Sheffield Corporation Tramways", the horse tram route from Snig Hill to Hillsborough Corner (then called Owlerton), commenced on the 19th May 1877. It was operated by the Sheffield Tramways Company as opposed to the Corporation and it seems the sheds were located on land which later became the electric tramways shed. There is a copy of the 1893 OS map in the book which shows the horse shed on the eastern part of the site.

The Holme Lane depot didn't become operational for electric cars until 1914 when the old horse shed was reconstructed with eight roads and a capacity of 55 trams.
