Guy [Speed ] Martin In Sheffield

Has anyone been following the Speed Guy Martin programmes on a Sunday night?

He's a bit of a mad hatter who seems to have no fear of speed whether on land, sea or air.

On Sunday nights programme it showed you him breaking the world record in sledging.

While working on this with the Sheffield University last summer it took you on to South Road

where they had pie and peas in the Perfect Pie Café then on to the Ponderosa in Upperthorpe

where you could just see the wording of the rear of the Boomerang pub.

Guy Martin was seen belly riding on a skate board through the Ponderosa all in training for

his up and coming fete. It sounds a bit crazy for the task that lies ahead of him but all's well

that ends well and it did, he broke the fastest sledging record.

Well done to the Yorkshire lad who sledged the 904ft route in Andorra which had a sheer

drop of 360ft in altitude, he did this in 83.5 mph breaking the German record of 62.25 mph.

Guy Martin also holds the British record for cycling at 112 mph.

Yes I know Dave, he comes from Kirmington but now lives in Grimsby.

I just wondered if any one had recognized the Sheffield scenes last Sunday night.

Wasn't really watching it that closely so missed the Sheffield scenes, except they did mention the design team was from Sheffield Hallam University and showed them at work, - presumably in the university engineering department.

He's quite a character.

His interest in old Victorian Engineering is very much like that of the late Fred Dibnah

His fearless attitude to speed is indeed much like Eddy "The Eagle" Edwards, except that Guy frequently wins his challenges while Eddie was content just to take part and winning was just a dream.

He is a TT races motorcycle champion, but with his character and mannerisms I imagine him being a bit like George Formby in his 1935 film "No Limit" in which he wins the TT races.

Hey UKL,

George Formby in the film No Limit winning the TT races

I'm sure you know a song about that!

RIDING IN THE TT RACES

(Gifford Cliffe) / George Formby

If there’s one thing that I like,

it's riding around on a motor-bike

I'm a speed king, when I once begin.

I once won first prize two and six,

I know all the dirt track dirty tricks

I'm a marvel when I'm out to win.

In a fifty mile race I am the best,

I ride five miles and skid the rest.

So come along and see me riding in the T.T. races

Easier than hop scotch, beating all the top notch aces.

I've been riding all my life, I started quite small.

I've ridden fairy cycles, aye, and scooters and all.

Hear the people cheer me when they see me steering backwards.

Down the hill I go at break-neck speed,

See me coming down the street with the winning post on the pillion seat.

Oh! Come along and see me riding in the T.T. race

Come along and see me riding in the T.T. races.

Easier than hop scotch, beating all the top notch aces.

Once my bike was hard to ride, but I didn't mind,

Until I found they'd hitched a charabanc on behind.

Everybody's scaring, I am such a daring rider.

My inside rattles when I go the pace.

My ribs begin to shake about, there's all my spare parts sticking out.

So come along and see me riding in the T.T. race.

I did read somewhere that some tv company wanted him to do a

Fred Dibnah type series but he turned it down.

I don't think he would have the time , he seems too busy breaking records.

ps The Perfect Pie Café that he went in is on South Road near the top

of Palm Street.

Speaking of Eddie, he's been coaching on a reality tv programme (ski jumping I think) and apparently it's inspired him to consider training for the 2018 Winter olympics...
