I had a walk on Gibraltar St today and I noticed this old building, I know that there was a Music Hall just a few doors past and the date stone states j794 (its not a mistype it looks like a j)so I take it is 1794 and I was thinking is this the Tankard?

Needs maps, lots of 'em ! Tankard seems to wander about; mainly on Westbar Green (various numbers); think Tankard was 1791, but a rebuild maybe ? Brittania Music Hall ... ?

Date stone on the original site or not ?

Is the building of the correct architectural style to be 1794 ?

Maps and directories ought to tell us more.

Of the remaining key buildings, number 117 Westbar is a rare survival of the

original domestic development of this area. The building, dated 1794, is a pair

of three storey houses with the ground floor converted to a shop.

Is this the same buildings mentioned in appraisal document Furnace Hill Conservation area?

Some maps for discussion (1853, 1890, 1950). Lots of assumptions made on numbering. Maybe the buiding was next door to the "Old Tankard" in 1853?

Is there a misprint in the pubs A-Z, 1879 Thomas C M Rackshaw?

It seems it was built as a Shop with accommodation above, looks like the Tankard was on the left hand side of the Britannia Music Hall. Its still an interesting building though.

Well, whoever renovated the frontage made a good job of the windows and door,

compare your photo to the older picturesheffield image.

A-Z not perfect, never will be. Intended as a start point for discussion, updates, additions and of course corrections (especially with addition evidence) from one and all always much appreciated.

If I was still editing the original list, it would never have been posted because I'd still be updating it, better to "put it up there" and take, well intentioned, constructive criticism.

Keep 'em coming please.
