Friends of Manor Lodge - Mary, Queen of Scots

Following the Chief Examiner of AQA GCSE History reading David Templeman’s book,

it has now been confirmed that Sheffield Manor Lodge is the mandatory case study for the Historic Environment AQA GCSE exam for 2023. This means that from this September, 50,000 GCSE students will be studying Manor Lodge and Mary Queen of Scots. Despite this only being announced last week, and the scheme of work yet to be released, the site has already had two school enquiries – one from Southampton! They are going to begin working on a new school session very soon. Although it is mandatory for only one cohort- a group of students taking the course for each set of two years- it is believed there will be some legacy as it is recommended they visit a similar site every year if the stated site is too far away, also because Mary Queen of Scots is a permanent part of the curriculum.

The Friends are proud to be partners in the Turret House re-interpretation and have donated £15,000 towards this project. The site will initially use this as match funding, alongside Green Estate funds, for the Heritage Lottery Fund bid but the good news is that even if the bid is rejected, the site still has a secured amount to dedicate to the Turret House reinterpretation. They will be able to tell the Tudor story of Sheffield Manor Lodge and Mary in new, exciting ways and hopefully engage entirely new audiences.

A big thank you to everyone who has contributed in various ways over the years.

Just a shame that there’s so little of the original lodge left, there must be a plethora of stone built structures that contain the guts of the lodge, however it fared a lot better than Sheffield Castle.
