RAWSON OF UPPERTHORPE – By Russell Stephen Smith1441, Stannington, in the parish of Bradfield is not far from Upperthorpe. The name John Rawson crops up quite frequently in the manor records for 1440-1 (18th and 19th years of the reign of King Henry VI), there were apparently two of them living near Sheffield at that time, perhaps father and son. On the 8th October 1440 John Rawson was fined ii d by the manor court for not proceeding against William Crokes, smith, in a plea of debt. On 2nd March 1440-1 both John Rawsons were listed amongst those parties with pleas of debt. Often the particulars of the debt are not specified in the manor records but on 17th July 1441 a case gives us a clue that one or both of these John Rawsons were ancestors of the first William Rawson, tanner of Upperthorpe, who appears above. At that court, held at Hallomshire, John Rawson complined of John Wighall concerning a plea of debt. A month later, when the court was being held at Sheffield John Wighall achknowledged himself bound to John Rawson for money he owed him for leather bought from him. It appears quite likely then, that this John Rawson, a dealer in leather, was a tanner also and ancestor of William Rawson of Upperthorpe who was born about 1500. Fine, fine document. Which bit of it is your answer ?

I searched for "razor" but only found my words.

(I'll have to ask more stupid questions, if I get back all that lovely detail lol where did all of that come from please ...)

My answer (which could, of course, be wrong) is not a Rawson, but is a "Greaves" if that helps any

Regarding the search......bear with me, I think I need to look again......

In the meantime, enjoy the site.

Thanks, the answer BTW came from a book, you may, or may not find the answer to this one on the Internet; even if you have Internet Version 2.7 with all the patches and fixes, look as long as you are comfortable with ... I have "my" answer and the source available ... Hey, Hey, Hey

John Greaves was the first local man to be described as a razormaker (when a debt of a guinea was acknowledged by the Cutlers' Company storehouse in 1681) but this reference is exceptionally early.

The Fiery Blades of Hallamshire - David Hey

Right or wrong, I can't argue with the source.

Happy Birthday Tsavo !!!!!
