As it was cut through the Earl of Wharncliffe's land I would guess some reference to the Wharncliffe Dragon?

The creature depicted on the top of Tankersley Tunnel is a Wyvern, which was the heraldic symbol of the Midland Railway which built the line.

The Wyvern can be found on many ex-Midland Railway buildings, Sheffield (Midland) Station for instance.
