Whereabouts Was Southfields In Sheffield

Looking for the whereabouts of Southfields. I'm presuming it was back to back housing in the area of Garden St/Apple St. The address I have is 2ct Southfields given in a burial in 1893. Tried looking on picturesheffield but the new search feature is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Hopeless! Thanks Lyn

Is it definitely Southfield? Thinking a bit round the subject, perhaps, but Smithfield is in the right sort of area and had courts in 1893.

Searched where, and what I could MA,

I have a tendency to go along with your suggestion of 'Smithfield'

Only Southfield I kinow is in south west London between Clapham and Wimbledon.

When i was at university I had a girlfriend lived there.

Never come across a southfield in Sheffield though, - if I had with the London connection it would have stuck and been remembered.

Think there was, or is a Southfield in the Beighton area.

Sounds like the southfields are a long way south of Sheffield then, - well over 100 miles south!

Sorry Steve, I had read that as Brighton.

Unfortunately the fields south of Brighton have long since fallen over the edge of the cliffs into the English Channel :(

Sorry Steve, I had read that as Brighton.

Stuarts dad used to have an allotment at Beighton when he lived at Hackenthorpe.

We sometimes used to walk to the allotment with garden tools or fresh vegetables.

Good job it wasn't Brighton, - that would have been one hell of a walk with a cabbage, a sack of carrots and a wheelbarrow load of potatoes!

I too think South Fields / Southfields = Smithfield

Based on the (fairly thin) evidence of Samuel Goddard and his wife Elizabeth.

Goddard, Samuel (Wire Drawer, age 71).

Died at 4ct South Fields; Buried on May 21, 1890

In the 1891 Census his widow Elizabeth is living at 10, Ct4 Smithfield.

If anyone has census details of their ancester, maybe we can confirm the location by looking at the likely path of the enumerator?
