I thought I had problems the other week, turned out to be the sata lead, though that should not be a problem with a laptop

I thought I had problems the other week, turned out to be the sata lead, though that should not be a problem with a laptop The usual error report is Boot Device Not Found Please install an operating system on your hard disk. Hard Disk - (3F0) Now that could mean that the hard disc has finally expired Or it could mean, as Stuart says, that the connecting lead has come adrift. Worth checking other options before writing the drive off, or even checking it by removing it and connecting it to another computer.
RichardB
No data on this drive. I'll try swopover idea; then take another one from the 40 or so in stock at work, I'll ring it in under warranty.

If there is no data on the drive, - no boot sector and no operating system then that is why it isn't working. It can't boot up if there is nothing to boot to. RichardB
1984-2012 in IT I'd kind of worked that out. RichardB
Possibly 8" soft sectored or hard sectored back then, one of 'em had holes punched into the disk, can't remember which, or even why.... 180Kb if I remember correctly. If it's from 1984 you would need a five and a quarter inch floppy ! HD

HD Yes, but the expression "three and a half inch floppy" was being used as an innuendo to belittle Richard and get a few cheap laughs. lol

hilldweller
If it's from 1984 you would need a five and a quarter inch floppy ! HD The first proper IBM PC's I worked on were a couple of IBM "Portable" PC's which had an Intel 8088 processor running at the fantastic speed of 4.77 (four point seven seven) Mhz. They were model PC5155 / 68 and had 256k of RAM. They had two 5.25 " floppys on the right side and about an 8 inch orange monochrome display to the left. They weighed about 15 kg but had a fold-down keyboard and a handle which folded across the front. They ran PCDOS v2.10. We thought they were the bees knees at the time (1984). I also worked on an ASEA robot which had a 4 bit Intel processor (4004). HD
