KevinB
I have a set of 6 teaspoons in beautiful condition and which date from the 1900-1910 era. They have markings on "JGG" then a peculiar symbol followed by "S" which I presume to be "Sheffield" rather than "son" since as far as I am aware he didn't have any sons. At 90 degrees to this writing are the initials "CS" which I presume is the maker. JGG is obviosley JGGraves but what do the other markings mean? ( see photo) Also I wonder what type of metal the spoons are made of? There are no hallmarks so they are not silver, neither are they EPNS because that mark is absent. They are not stainless steel as it wasn't invented till later. Could it be that they are made of Britania metal perhaps? Comments appreciated! KevinB
www.justanswer.com/antiques/4h9kh-spoon-just-discoved-shed. Thanks! That explains what the "S" is but what about the maker's mark (if it is a maker's mark), "CS"? The link you point me to says the maker was JGGraves but he was the retailer not the maker, so I reason that CS is the maker. Which Sheffield cutler had the initials CS? KevinB
Thanks for your help everybody! I think I have it sorted. The "JGG" is JGGraves, the retailer, the funny squiggle I'm still working on. The "S" is for Sheffield and the "CS" which I thought was the makers mark, I now believe to be the metal the spoons are made of, Coin Silver. Any help with the funny squiggle would most definitely be appreciated!
