I've already commented on your new avitar in another topic.

It's a good one, not 500 club, not Castle Crisps, just you.

You can't tell from the avitar but I don't normally smell quite that bad. I'd just done my first even session on a canon and the tradition is the boss man gets to smear your face with the ramrod you've been using all day whilst you kneal on the battlefield.

Nothing quite like spent gunpowder and "gunk" up the old nose 'oles ...

At these "re-enactment" events what happens to people like you and me who wear glasses for age related eyesight correction?

Although there were glasses in the 1640's, - lenses had been used the century before for a range of optical applications such as telescopes (Galileo) microscopes (van Lewenheuk) and of course, spectacles for eyesight correction (allegedly Henry VIII had a pair), - they would have been very expensive items and ordinary people like those that signed up or were recruited to fight for either side in the Civil War would not be able to afford them.

They certainly look out of place in modern day Civil War re-enactments.

I'm no expert, having been to one event.

"We" try to be as authentic as possible regarding clothes etc but something like glasses are allowed, I wouldn't be much good without them. The longer you are a member, the better the outfits get; shoes are expensive and its normally 2 years before most folks get around to a pair of hand-made latchets.

Some folks have period appropriate glasses but its more a case of try the best you can, within reason.

Watches and mobiles are removed; plastic water bottles are hidden within cotton bags etc.

A well-intentioned illusion, thats what it is, with the hope people will accommodate those things that can't reasonably be changed. The slow match used to light the powder is, of course, initailly lit by modern lighter but with your back to the audience.

Round the back of a group of trees we were poised to set off matching volleys from either side of the field, waiting for the medieval guys to finish their display when a buch of Romans showed up on horseback, also hiding behind the trees; waiting for us to do our bit. Very amusing as we were loaded and had to draw their attention to the fact the canon were charged with powder. It's on;y grass-wadding that is fired but the expulsion of air could still knock you down at 30 metres - better safe than sorry.
