Cowmouth Farm (The Dairy) Norton

Recommended Posts

This lovely old farm has been marked for re-development. I know from my research it was definitely in existence in the 16th century. I have heard it has been confirmed that there are medieval structures within the buildings.

Please help get this farm listed before another medieval building is lost in Sheffield.

Given that present opinion put over 400 years of occupants, that's a lot of people spinning in their graves.

It is left of the top of Derbyshire Lane on the Hemsworth Road by Graves Park.

It is at present labled the Dairy and is used by adults with learning difficulties who make garden furniture there and various other crafts as well as run a cafe.

Until very recently it was still a dairy.

Disappointingly brief, but included for the sake of completeness.

Cricket, Lawn Tennis, Rugby Football, Association Football, Men's Hockey and Women's Hockey. A Pavillion has not yet been erected, but temporary accomodation for men is provided at the adjacent Cowmouth Farm.

University of Sheffield, Calendar 1916.

Said is was brief ...

I am working on it. I now know that neighbouring Sheepshill farm which was later included into Cowmouth was in posession of the Blythes of Bishops House in the late 16th century, but as yet don't know who farmed Cowmouth as haven't found it mentioned as such earlier than a baptismal record for 1584. The problem being that it is often lumped in as Boleshill. (Boleshill farm used to be part of Graves Park but was sold off.)

I have a lot of field names now which may help. I was always convinced that Cowmouth was at least as early as 1500s. Seems like I may be right.

I don't claim to know anything about the subject; stuff just posted as I found it. It might be nice to see a list, in date order, of what information you have; if that would be possible please. It might just give me and others a nudge to other names, places, dates.

Thank you.
