Edmund
Grey Horse William Milner, Blast Lane (though I have this down as Stoke Street, were they one and the same place in 1860 please ?) On Fairbanks 1808 map Blast Lane is just called "The Road to the Park Furnace" (ie BLAST furnace?) and runs at least as far as the Park works. On Baines 1822 map it is still the "Road to the Park Furnace" In 1853 it is called Blast Lane but appears to have been disrupted by the new canal. There are two sections, one by the canal basin, then one as it joins Attercliffe Road (Sheffield and Tinsley turnpike), beyond the Park Iron works: By 1890 the section between the Park Iron Works and Attercliffe Road has been renamed Stoke Street. The section by the canal basin remains Blast Lane to this day:

Edmund
Norfolk Vaults G. Lancaster, 1 Broad Lane (is this the one at 28 Dixon Lane ?) No, it's a different one! It's already logged as the Norfolk Vaults 74 Townhead Street (J Lancaster in 1859): At the Brewster Sessions (August 27 1853) Wm Bramley was refused a licence (presumably an upgrade from the beer-house licence) for the purpose built inn on the corner of Broad Street/Sims Croft: The map shows its location in 1853: On August 16 1856, the landlady Mrs Wilman was in court, she had been passed counterfeit crown coins at her house, the Norfolk Vaults. The Whites Directory for 1862 shows the licensee as Mr James Sorby (beer-house). He was living at Radford Row (immediately behind Sims Croft) at the 1861 census (see link):

Guest stimpson
I'm doing some research on the Neepsend area, and I've been trying to look into the history behind The Ship Inn - and it's interesting to see "William Ibbotson" as being the landlord in 1860. "William Ibbotson" was also the owner of Globe Works, just down the road. Could it be the same one? If so, it would perhaps be somewhat odd, as he was a staunch Methodist - but on the other hand it would seem an odd coincidence too - and the dates pretty much add up. If so, I would have thought he would have been the owner as well as technically the landlord. Anyone got any thoughts...? Also, will we ever get to the bottom of this tale about the two seaman who died in the flood?...I've not found actual record of it...mind you that's a whole other can of worms... Edmund
Definitely two different William Ibbotsons. William Frederick Ibbotson " Merchant & Steel Manufacturer employer of 200 men" was at 205 Western Bank in 1861: In 1851 William Ibbotson was at the Ship Inn Shalesmoor with his wife Elizabeth: In 1861 William's widowed mother Maria was at the Ship Inn: and William and Elizabeth were at their house at Parkwood Spring:

Guest stimpson
Great stuff Edmund, thanks. I thought it would have been odd - but then I also thought in was an odd coincidence, so there you go...it was the latter. Also interesting that the industrialist Ibbotson was at Western Bank in 1861. When Globe Works was built in 1825, he lived there with his family (hence its somewhat palatial appearance), so at some point he must have moved out. Maybe after trade unionists bombed the place in 1843! Anyway - great work, thank you.
