What Summed Sheffield In The 1980's Up ?

Sheffield History

If you were around in the 1980's what would you say summed up Sheffield in those times ?

How about Sheaf Valley Baths ?

The post office in Fitzalan Square ?

The movies that were shown at the ABC cinema perhaps ?

Or the dirty Wicker with its alehouses and porno cinema ?

Travelling upstairs on buses so dad could have a smoke.

"Shop on End" sweet shop at the end of Lowedges Road - used to be packed straight after school. think it was called "Carols" as well at some point.

Air-raid siren testing during the height of the cold war.

The council run bonfire nights.

Sat in one of the sunken seating areas on the moor on a Saturday afternoon with my mates eating Bolognese & chips from one of the kiosks.

Buying the "space invaders" new United kit from Suggs - probably about 1983.

The abiding memories I have of living as a teenager in the 1980s in sheffield, is the boarded up shops in town. People are too ready to blame meadowhall for the downfall of the city centre as a retail centre, but in the 1980s there were rows of empty shops. I was at college and the Polytechnic in the 1980s and so I spent a lot of time around the city centre streets, it was a busy place, but many established shops were closing or leaving the city at that time...

1980 - Got married

32 years now that sounds a long time, but I am sure there will be members who can beat that :o

1984/5 - The miners strike, driving around in a BT van at night, kept getting stopped by the police searching for "Flying Pickets"

Why would you have this 1980's pop group in the back of your BT van?

...and why would the police be searching for them.

In keeping with the topic (almost!)

Mom & dad taking me to see the flying pickets at the crucible round about 1984 after they had just released "Only you"

Think Richard Digance was the support.

I got married 1979 and I also went to see the Flying Pickets but I couldn't remember what year that was.

Hubby wasn't impressed with them but I thought they were ok and yes I believe it was Richard Digance

support act, what ever happened to him?

"Bendy" buses

Cafes in Endcliffe Park and Forge Dams (still there and still exactly the same)

Heavy metal fans seemed to be all over the place

Fairs visiting local parks or pubs

The sound of the cathedral bells on a Sunday afternoon. Eerie if you were in the city centre as usually deserted.

The Number 9 circular bus

Chip shops when they were all usually fairly decent

The Asda Bus to Handsworth

The journey to Shiregreen via Attercliffe when there was still a steel industry

The smell of the brewery near The Wicker

The bear and bees at Weston Park Museum
