Taking Orders

Perhaps we could get a discount for a bulk order lol

Back in our Fellbrigg days about 30 years ago there was that guy we called "Captain 10 pints" who used to come in at 10:20, 10 minutes before closing time (it was 10:30 in those days) and order 2 pints. He would drink the first in one while the second was being pulled and then pay for both. He spent longer drinking the second as he spent a lot of time "eyeing it up" first. On the last orders bell he ordered a further 8 pints (yes, a gallon of beer) which he very carefully lined up on the bar in front of him. On the bar closed bell (10:30) he very quickly but systematically downed all his 8 remaining pints before the end of the 10 minutes drinking up time and at 10:40 just said "goodnight" to the bar staff and casually walked out and went home.

Now he knew how to order beer in bulk!

And we thought binge was a new thing !!

I suppose drinking to excess has always been a social problem.

Captain 10 pints didn't just do this as a "binge", it was his regular night out.

We have been told that he also did exactly the same in other local pubs, and also had been drinking in other pubs before coming in to do his "last orders" act.

It is also rumoured that he continued drinking when he got home.

However, he never seemed to get drunk, never lost his temper or became argumentative, walked out in a straight line ( he didn't drive and had quite a long walk home) and was very personable if you spoke to him, although he prefered to drink alone as he was aware that few could keep up with him and that his drinking was becoming a public spectacle.

We did wonder though, firstly what he did for a living as even at 50p a pint (at the time) he would be spending a considerable sum from his income on booze alone and secondly what long term effects it was all having on his health. He was a big guy, somewhat overweight, but obviously quite fit, but we don't know what happened to him or even if he is still alive.
