Hi

I am wanting to find out who used to live on Bingley Street when it was lined with terraces. I know people on here can 'magic up' house numbers/residents etc. Where are this info as i am fed up with having to ask others to find it for me.

Also, would this info also show any businesses on a street/road etc?

It is quite annoying that the ordnance survey maps we have on here dont cover Bingley Street, gggrrrrrrrr!!!

Thanks

Dan

No residents listed, indeed, no Bingley Street listed in Kelly's 1957 directory. Just gets a mention, as follows :

Hicks Street, 3

8, Wilson Edmund, newsagent

Sylvester, W. H. Ltd, enginners (Aztec Works)

Ashton David & Co, engineers, Aztec Works

Lambert, Austin J., hammer manufacturers (Aztec Works)

... Bingley & Bury Streets) ...

......... Platt Street..........

52 Jolley Jas. G., warden

---------------------------------------------------David Ashton & Co. Lrd, mechanical and electrical engineers, also show at Aztec Works, Hicks Street (White's 1919 and Kelly's 1925) (SheffieldRecordsOnline.org.uk)

Regarding the OS maps' I bought all of what was on offer.

Don't spend much time searching here for Bingley Street because in

List of the smaller streets, lanes &c., in Sheffield.

it states

N.B. - The following list comprise the smaller streets, &c., not separately given in the Street Directory.

Brilliant!!!!!

Thanks ever so much, you guys are fantastic. I know what to do now and think i will be looking on those Kellys directories later.

I am trying to get together some information for my in-laws who have just taken on a unit on what was Bingley street. There is a map on another thread on here about Hicks street that shows houses all the way down both sides of the street.

I had no idea it used to be a street all on its own. the turn off down to thier unit from Hicks Street is all fenced off etc, but the cobbles remain and curb/kerb edge stones. When i first went, my father in law was wanting to show me around the unit and all the plans they had. i wanted to go back outside to look at the cobbles, the edging stones and also at the scars left on the side of buildings from ones which have been torn down, lol, trust me.

Anyway, i wouldnt have thought it had houses on there at any time to look at it today, as it is all purely commercial now. And the opposite end of what was Bingley street, the end that came out on Harvest Lane, has vanished underneath something built int he 60's by the looks of it.

I was looking on Google earth last night, but it doesnt go down their approach (old Bingley Street) and now I know all this i am desperate to get back down there and have a proper look.

Thanks again

Dan

" ...in 1898 4 Bingley Street was occupied by George Hodkinson (my great grandfather). In 1900 Edward Sullivan was living there when he married Clara Hodkinson - younger sister of George. In 1901 the house was occupied by Samuel and Sarah Ann Eyre (nee Hodkinson - and older sister of Clara and George) and their family."

A bit of an update to this.

Again I want to thank you all for the work you put in to finding out all these names etc.
I have been contacted by a lady who used to live in Bingley Street. I presume after reading this thread.

She has been very helpful and even provided me with copies of sketches her father has drawn from their time in Bingley Street.

Thanks again everyone :)
