Unitedite Returns
There were originally thirty, but subsequently, quite a lot, but the list that you are looking at probably starts with:- The Most Honourable Charles, Marquis of Rockingham [1773 - 1791] The Earl Strafford [1773 - 1791] :P
RichardB
Well, I can't remember anything about this other than finding a list. If you've got more to bring then great. Bring it on. Thank you. There were originally thirty, but subsequently, quite a lot, but the list that you are looking at probably starts with:- The Most Honourable Charles, Marquis of Rockingham [1773 - 1791] The Earl Strafford [1773 - 1791]
Unitedite Returns
In 1773, the towns of Sheffield and Birmingham had sought and secured powers for the assaying and marking of wrought silver plate, as prior to that such items had been sent to London, a distance of 150 miles. By that act, certain persons were incorporated into a company called and known by the name of “The Guardians of the Standard of Wrought Plate”. These gentlemen were appointed guardians for life, or so long as they resided within 20 miles of Sheffield. They were authorised to meet on the 5th July 1773 to elect from amongst themselves, four persons to be Wardens of the Company and to hold that position for one year, unless re-elected the following year, [the first Monday in July of every year]. The Guardians also elected one, or more able and skilful person, or persons experienced in the assaying of silver, to be the Assayer, or Assayers. Unitedite Returns
On a lighter note, Arnold Watson [The Sheffield Assay Office, With a Few Notes on the Silver Trade of the Town: A paper read before the Sheffield Literary and Philosophical Society, October 1st, 1889] tells us that in the earlier years of the institution, that it was the custom of the Guardians to dine at The Tontine or The Angel Public Houses and he kindly provides us with a transcription of one of the bills for one such dinner held at The Tontine. Looks good work if you can get it.
