Mayfield Valley Mysteries

I've found 20 or so monochrome photos (below) of farms in the Mayfield Valley taken during the early 1960s. There's only one I can recognise (Hole in the Wall Farm) and wonder if anyone can offer any clues as to their whereabouts. [Ooops! Just noticed that a couple of them are duplicate images].

And somewhere, I have a bunch of photos of the Hammer & Pincers at Bents Green when it was undergoing serious renovation (not just a refurbishment) in the late 1950s or very early 60s. The building was completely gutted and many of it's original features were exposed briefly, including, as far as I can remember, the cruck structure and some of its original features as a smithy.

Anybody interested in having me try to find them?

A bit difficult what with the photos being so small and the copyright message obliterating some of the crucial detail on some, but here goes for a first shot.

12 is Bennett Farm/Cottages.

19 and 20 look like Bower Hill Farm, demolished in the 60's to make way for a golf course that was never built.

I only know of 4 cruck buildings in the area; one was below Yarncliffe farm and demolished in the 70's; one was at High Storrs Farm, demolished in the 60's; one is a cottage at Far Whiteley, and the last is a barn at Priest Hill Farm, now I think a Grade II listed building.

Any chance of reposting larger images with smaller lettering please?

I'm not exactly sure where I was in the Mayfield Valley when I took this,

any ideas to the names of the farms please.

The main group of buildings is the former Mill View Farm, also a former riding school, now called Riverside Cottage according to Google maps. I think it may now be two cottages, with the far left part still being called Mill View farm. The building behind and higher is probably Mayfield farm, though it looks a bit close. Or it may be one of the buildings at Mayfield Study Centre or the chapel, but I think they would be more to the right behind trees.

The picture is from the footpath alongside Clough Lane, near the junction with Mark Lane, which is the lane on the left of the photo.

I had an idea that you would know Bayleaf,

I will take a look at some maps.

Thank you.

Sorry Steve, for 'lane on the right' read 'lane on the left'!

No 13 I'm pretty sure is the row of cottages overlooking the junction of Mayfield Rd and Quiet Lane

Number 4 look suspiciously like Bassett House on Bassett Lane (Probably taken from the same spot as number 12)

Are you able to send me full size copies of 3, 5, and 11 without the copyright writing on? Pretty sure I know 3 but need to see it in better clarity.

I couldn't help but notice that the postcard says 'Fairthorn Farm' above the message, which is where I'm assuming the sender lives. This would likely be from Fairthorn Green, Redmires. @Pole man

Can anyone decipher a year from the postmark or the name(s) of the sender? I read it as Dec 24 09, from B N & N.

Hi Stu, yes I agree 100 percent.

Thanks for the confirmation @Heartshome. I'm trying to match the postcard to the residents of Fairthorn Farm/Green at around that time.

The 1901 census shows that the Lawson family were there (as per the information we had from @Pole man in the other thread), but the farm changed hands by the 1911 census and it was the Weston family living there. However, struggling to match the initials B, N & N....
