19Th Century Herbalists

Hello all,

I'm trying to find my great great grandparents, whose daughter Emma Mower married William Milner, a collier, in Sheffield in 1863; Emma's father's name not being given on the certificate. With no father's name, it could be that Emma was brought up with a different surname.

All the usual searches on two of the main genealogical sites have proved fruitless.

My grandfather used to make herbal remedies, evidently taught by his grandfather who was a herbalist.

This is now my only lead so I would be grateful for any information on 19th century herbalists in the Sheffield, Rotherham and surrounding areas. Titles of local periodicals and tradesmen's directories would be useful, then I could ask my library to locate them for me.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Hazel.

I would like to add Samuel Scholey b1877. In 1911 he lists his occupation as herbalist botanist. Living at 683 Staniforth Road Darnell.

On 7 Mar 1912 Samuel and family depart from Liverpool on the Empress of Ireland destination Canada and occupation botanist intending to make farming his occupation. This obviously doesn't work out though as on 9th April 1912 he leaves New Brunswick Canada for Liverpool as a third class passenger, this time travelling on the Empress of Britain occupation herbalist. (his family aren't mentioned). On 27 Jun 1913 Samuel AND family leave Liverpool for Quebec again on the Empress of Britain. On the 4th July they are listed as arriving at Quebec as tourists, destination Winnipeg, occupation Herbalist. Finally on 14 Aug 1913 they arrive in London (can't read the occupation but it looks like horsebreaker??) leaving Quebec on the Corinthian 3rd class.

So does this mean at that period of time you could make quite a living from being a herbalist as it can't have been cheap to travel backwards and forwards like that. IF any one can enlighten me that would be great.

He is listed in the 1919-20 Kelly's as a herbalist at 9+11 Rushby Street . in this directory is also listed Ernest Scholey at 67 Effingham Street and Harry Scholey 642 Attercliffe Road and 34 Attercliffe Common. (Ernest is Samuels brother, and Harry is his uncle.

regards

Helene

It might be useful to know where the marriage took place, Emma's address, and the names of the witnesses.

edit

also, what was her age?

Thanks everyone.

The marriage took place somewhere in Sheffield; the marriage certificate is attached.

It only says Sheffield for Emma's place of residence.

Her age was 22 at time of marriage, so born about 1841; later census records confirm this.

Witnesses were Peter and Hannah Webster.

Regards

Hazel.
