Edmund
The original Antipas was a contemporary of the Apostle John, who wrote The Book Of Revelation. Antipas was reputed to be the Bishop of the Christian church at Pergamos, and was martyred for his faith because of his consistent faithful witnessing in the face of all the satanic evil present there. When Antipas was advised: "Antipas, the whole world is against you!" Antipas reputedly replied: "Then I am against the whole world" Antipas was supposedly roasted alive in a hollow life-size bull, which had a bonfire under its belly, because he refused to renounce his faith in Christ. An Antipas Stephens died at the Shrewsbury hospital aged 86 on 17th November 1831. He had been an inmate there for several years and was universally respected. This suggests that there was another Antipas, possibly his son, who had been the landlord at the Golden Ball. Maybe this was the Antipas Stevens who died 24th Sep 1840, aged 63. From Leader's Reminiscences (1875): The Ball Inn, next door, then the Golden Ball, was kept in my youthful days by Antipas Stevens, a very intelligent and respectable man, who kept his house in proper order. I believe he took to it at the time Mr. Crich removed to the Black Swan,Snighill. Mr. Stevens was by trade a silversmith ; and I have an impression that he had been apprenticed to Ashforth, Ellis, and Co., or, at least, had worked for them. Edmund
The Cossack, Howard Street: At the August 30th 1856 Brewster Sessions, the licence was granted to Mr George Barlow. Robert Colbridge had his licence suspended the previous year due to "misconduct", and it was refused in August 1856, however the directories continued to show him as landlord into 1856. The Cossack was advertised as being to let with immediate possession, in July 1855, by the Pond street Brewery.
