Edmund
1868 Union Hotel . 1 Union Street. W.H.Jeffcock Spirit Merchant. 1868 The Alhambra Music Hall. 15 Union Street. [ no named keeper as yet ] The Alhambra Music Hall on the corner of Union Street and Charles Street began as a wine and spirit merchants run by Baines and People. There is some uncertainty about the sequence of development (see the original newspaper cuttings below) but one version is as follows. Edwin James Gascoigne (an insolvent debtor in 1860 running the Prince of Wales, Fawcett Street and file cutting) London Gazette 27 July1860.pdf and took on the Union Street premises converting the wine and spirit merchants to a dram shop, then adding a concert hall. He went bankrupt again then regained the property. He acquired further property on each side (Union Street and Charles Street), built the Alhambra Music Hall on top. He went bankrupt again and was released from bankruptcy in 1867 London Gazette 15 Feb 1867.pdf In 1868 the Alhambra was in the hands of W.H Jeffcock, but by the end of the year was up for Let In 1870 Jeffcock was the outgoing tenant. Gascoigne applied for a licence which was disputed by Jeffcock, however Gascoigne did gain the licence. However he went bankrupt again in 1873 (reported in the London Gazette) and the Alhambra was taken over by George Cooper, an inn-keeper from Leicester, the son of William Cooper (of the London Apprentice / London Music Hall on Westbar) In March 1880 Mr Miles of the Alhambra Music Hall raised a subscription of £4 /4 /0 for the Sheffield Irish Distress Fund. In July 1880 the Alhambra was "under New Management" Possibly this was Samuel Sweeney (referred to as being the landlord in 1881 in the SH index) In 1882 tragedy struck. The Alhambra caught fire and the Independent published its 2nd June report while it was still burning. The next day a fuller report was published, giving some history of the establishment, a description of the interior and details of the entertainment that night, and the course of events. Numerous people made efforts to assist the destitute performers who had lost not only their costumes, but importantly, their sheet music. The ruin remained, being looted for scrap, until it rose from the ashes as the Phoenix.
ukelele lady
Thank you for all that information Edmund. The only thing I found for 1868 was H.W Jeffcock being at number 1 Union Street and for the Alhambra Music Hall number 15 Union Street had the names Foxon & Robinson. I haven't a clue who these can be as they are not mentioned in the newspaper write-ups.

Edmund
I haven't a clue who these can be as they are not mentioned in the newspaper write-ups. Messrs Foxon and Robinson were a firm of coopers that were behind and next door to Gascoigne's premises. They suffered from his expansion and were forced to operate by gaslight during the daytime. They went to court to try to have the building reduced to its original height, but were confounded by one of Gascoigne's bankruptcies in 1873 which put the property into trustees hands and thus saved it.
