Hello all! I am a Master's History student at the University of Sheffield. Currently I am also acting as a researcher for an upcoming project by Sheffield Theatres exploring the history of the canal.

I am particularly keen to find out and record people's memories of the canal between 1939-1972.

So if anyone has any stories about the canal in this period, whether it be memories of them during the Blitz/woking alongside and around it/the traffic that used to use it, please feel free to share them below!

I've linked my colleagues to this little gem of a website too so I'd expect they'll also be keen to ask you all about similar memories relating to their areas of research!

Thank you ever so much in advance for any help you can provide!

(we also have an email account for our project so if you'd like to get in contact with us further please email sheffieldcanalhistory@gmail.com)

You may be aware the locks at Tinsley flight suffered damage during WW2 - there is a much vandalised memorial on the towpath

from Wikipedia

"In December 1940, lock 6 of the Tinsley flight was hit by a bomb dropped as part of the Second World War bombing campaign against British cities, and suffered considerable damage.[3] A plaque nearby records the efforts of the workers who reconstructed the lock in difficult circumstances."

Welcome to Sheffield History Steve90 and thank you for posting.

I am sure some of our members will be able to help you with the information you have requested.

The Sheffield Canal 1939 to 1972, - it sounds like a specialist chosen subject for "Mastermind" with those date limits added.

As the canal predates 1939 and is still around today why have you chosen this very specific 33 year period?

Thanks for your welcome DaveH and Dunsbyowl for pointing out that book!

There are a team of 6 of us doing research on the canal, I've been allocated the start of the Second World War to the limit at which our client wants our research to end.

It already seems like a mammoth project! We have so much history to cover! But we've been told to primarily gather peoples' memories and stories....

So does anyone else have any tales about the canal? They can be as trivial as you like! :)
