We think we've got it bad sometimes!

A singularly happy act must be

mentioned in connexion with this visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales to

Sheffield. It came in the shape of a letter to Alderman Mark Firth on December

23rd, 1878, from Sandringham, from the Secretary of the Princess of Wales, and

came at a time when distress in Sheffield was exceedingly severe. The letter was

in the following terms: " Sir,--The Princess of Wales, having heard with great

regret of the severe distress prevailing in Sheffield, and gratefully

remembering the kind reception received from the inhabitants when the Prince of

Wales and herself visited the town during your Mayoralty, Her Royal Highness has

directed me to forward the enclosed cheque for fifty pounds as a contribution to

the special fund now being raised for relief of the poor in Sheffield,
