Who was Cheyney ? and why is there a man apparently having a wee into the gutter of the building on the right ?

Bayleaf
Named after Edward Cheney, who bought up surplus land there after St Paul's was built. The Cheneys were a prominent Sheffield family, and Edward's grandson Dr Hugh Cheney was one of the first surgeons at the Royal Infirmary. Dunno who the bloke is, but have you seen thesize of those setts?!

According to picturesheffield the paintig by Sykes is not of Cheney Square, it is looking from the south, with Pinstone Street on the L/H side & Norfolk Street on the right of the painting. Great stuff Steve, I had my suspicions about this picture. Are you going to update the BBC site ? I'll update it, if you wish - then I can hurl more mild-mannered abuse at them !- or shall we see what else we can find first ?

You inform them please, I would say that they have got their tags mixed up. This one looks like it could be Cheney Square ..www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings

I'm not overly confident with the "1870's" date from PictureSheffield; I've already updated the BBC with : Godfrey Sykes, Engraver and artist, 30 Westfield Terrace (1852) - I think the 1858 date may be closer to the mark. Not finding Hubbard as mentioned on your PictureSheffield link Steve.

Any chance of a portion of map looking up from Pinstone/Norfolk Street and covering St Paul's please Steve ? Thank you.
