Observations on the Present State of the Poor in Sheffield (1774) - James Wheat

"Their houses, if such they can be called, are miserable cabins, small, low, close, dark and dirty, where unpolluted Air seldon enters - here a father, a mother, and their children often reside in one room, and often sleep in one Bed, or if they happen to be possessed of two, they are generally of such wretched quality as to be fit only to generate filth, vermin and disease.
