The Easter Book 1571 lists the following districts

Sheffield – central (not included elsewhere)

Farsyde - probably Fargate

Kynges Streat - King Street, also known as Pudding Lane

Market Place

The Yreysche Crose - The Irish Cross

West Barre - NW limit of the town

Newhaule - New Hall stood in Snig Hill

Water Lane - there since 1413, a poor district

Castellgrene

Pryor Rowe – Prior Row the name given to the five principal properties on the North side of what is now High Street

Suggests the Elizabethan town had much the same shape and size as depicted by Ralph Gosling (1736) and had probably not altered much in its layout since William de Lovetots time (12th Century)
