RichardB Posted April 23, 2007 Share Posted April 23, 2007 The Easter Book 1571 lists the following districts Sheffield – central (not included elsewhere) Farsyde - probably Fargate Kynges Streat - King Street, also known as Pudding Lane Market Place The Yreysche Crose - The Irish Cross West Barre - NW limit of the town Newhaule - New Hall stood in Snig Hill Water Lane - there since 1413, a poor district Castellgrene Pryor Rowe – Prior Row the name given to the five principal properties on the North side of what is now High Street Suggests the Elizabethan town had much the same shape and size as depicted by Ralph Gosling (1736) and had probably not altered much in its layout since William de Lovetots time (12th Century) Extract from A History of Sheffield – David Hey Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
