Hi,

I have been looking up my family history. We were under the understanding that my great grandfather ran a pub called the 'Stag'.

Thought you might be interested in the attached photo. Isaac is driving, with his wife Bertha (died 1922) and 2 sons.

I have other photos if you are interested.

That's one or 'em; my data may be a little ahead of what is posted here, but then, some is behind - none of which helps.

Given me something to research there, my other side of the family is Pepper of Sheffield. Got some digging to do!

Thanks so much, it's really quite difficult to tell. i struggle with Pepper as they originate from Wentworth as farmers/publicans. At some point they moved to Sheffield and patented a brewing machine. I have a record book of a Dr. Robert Pepper so reading through this to try ad find any clues, will update. There's alsorts in it from the accounts of the Sheffield Carriage company to the cost of a patent.

Charles Isaac Needham was born in Cardiff in 1869 the son of John and Elizabeth Needham - John was a Manchester wheel chipper. The family soon moved to Sheffield and Charles aged 2 in 1871, was living at Midland Place, Wincobank.  In 1881 Charles was at 10 Neville street, his father, a fetler, had remarried after his wife's death.

In 1891 Charles was a moulder living with his family at 48 Worksop road. In June 1895 he was a 26 year old moulder, at Attercliffe, when he married Bertha Bray, the daughter of publican William Henry Bray (of the Plough Inn, Milner Road). Bertha's parents both died in 1899.

By August 1901 Charles and Bertha were at the White Hart Inn, and he gave notice that he intended to apply to move his licence to new premises to be erected next door to the existing pub, both the property of Wm Stones Ltd. - it was approved.

From 1914 to 1916 he was also president of the Sheffield and Rotherham Licensed Victuallers Association, difficult war years for the licensed trade. Charles retired in 1919.

In 1920 during the 1919-20 iron moulders' strike, William Pepper the new landlord of the White Hart showed his sympathies when he held a concert in aid of their Distress Fund.

In June 1921, Charles having retired from the White Hart in 1919, was living at 13 Main Road, Handsworth. However the retirement was short lived, as by July 1921 the licence of the Plumpers Inn at Tinsley was transferred to him.

In November 1925, still at the Plumpers, he was fined for negligently driving his car zig-zag fashion, at speed in Furnival Road, hitting a lorry. Drunkeness was involved. He blamed poor lighting creating pockets of darkeness combined with "the wrong glasses".

From 1928 to 1934 he was treasurer of the Licensed Victuallers Association

In September 1933 he left the Plumpers for the Stag Inn at Herringthorpe. On taking the Stag Inn he practically rebuilt it.

In 1939 aged 71 and still at the Stag Inn, he was the first chairman of the newly formed Golf Society of the Licensed Victuallers Association.

Charles died aged 73, still at the Stag Inn and was buried on 24th September 1942 in Darnall Cemetery.
