Confusing due to road name changes,

the Bridge Inn stood next to the bridge over the River Porter,

the PH is shown & named on 1853 and 1891 maps,

(situated on Ponds Lane on the 1853 map) so it is worth

checking out any Bridge Inn's on Pond St. and Pond Ln. upto the latter date (1891).

Flash Earth + markes the approximate spot.

I'll settle for the Bridge Pond Street although in the books it says Edward not Edwin Bradshaw.

1 -17 Union Street was also the address of the Alhambra Palace Vaults - I have Edmund James (1871); the place was destroyed by fire in 1882 (Samuel Sweeney last known keeper; possibly also known as the Royal Alhambra) and rebuilt as the Phoenix circa 1885.

So, more research/know

ledge required re the Alhambra Palace Vaults, could the Union be a forerunner of the Alhambra ?

Confused, you will be ... he he

For consideration only :

Charlotte Tavern, 17 Charlotte Street, open from 1859 (maybe earlier); 1859 Thomas Boulby and 1893 Edmund Dakin and Alfred Smedley.

Prince of Wales, 19 Charlotte Street (only known from 1881 onwards) - Alfred Smedley (again), 1881.

So, possible they are one and the same place.

White Swan, 36 Charlotte Street; known from 1871 onwards (William Taylor).

Don't know if this helps or hinders

Heres the answer from Hugh posted to the old ENG-SHEFFIELD list...10 years ago:

If you check out the Sportsman Carlton rd on the 1881 census:

Arthur COLDWELL Head M Male 35 Attercliffe, York, England Publican (Licensed Victlr.)

Charlotte COLDWELL Wife M Female 33 Berry Edge, Northumberland, England

John W. COLDWELL Son Male 14 Attercliffe, York, England Scholar

Annie M. COLDWELL Dau Female 12 Attercliffe, York, England Scholar

Polly COLDWELL Dau Female 7 Attercliffe, York, England Scholar

Edwin COLDWELL Son Male 3 Attercliffe, York, England

Arthur COLDWELL Son Male 2 w Attercliffe, York, England

Emma HOYLAND Servant U Female 16 Tinsley, York, England Domestic Servant

Its the same fella as the Sportsman 504 Attercliffe road on the Index.

So by that reasoning and Hugh's explanation i'd say your Royal Oak is this one from the index:

Royal Oak

484 Attercliffe Road

Open 1870 Closed 1938 Span 68

Hmmm I'm not too sure about the Royal Oak being the same as the Sportsman.

According to to Kelly's and Whites directories , they were both existing in the same year.

Sportsman 114 Carlton Road, Edwin Dixon 1876

Royal Oak 92-4 Carlton Road , James Fowler 1876

I've just got round to doing the Sportsman , Attercliffe and you're right about the name change.

I've got Sportsman 66 Carlton Road then 116 Carlton Road until finally 510-14 Attercliffe Road.

I should hope they were not drunk at the time while searching for their favourite pub.

A 'Station Inn' is shown and named on a 1853 map as the

'Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Station Inn'.

And at a later date became the 'Alexandra Hotel'.

FYI only, with the way the house numbers move around this is not overly likely to be the same building ...

Sportsman's Inn, 41 West Bar - but got publicans names back to 1820 ...

more irrelevant information : a George Bletcher known at Franklin Hotel, Sharrow Lane/Franklin Street in 1876.

That would be Admiral Sir Charles John Napier then ...

Still no idea about the but, possibly a rename ... Shades/Shades Vaults or maybe Waterloo Turf Tavern, possibly something entirely different (my head hurts) ...
