Guest Mineseeker
I've found reference to Button Hill Colliery on a map about 1830. It seems to be on the land that is now Mylnhurst School at the Woodholm Road / Button Hill junction. Does anybody have any knowledge of this long-forgotten coal mine? Can't even begin to place Button Hill ! or Woodholm Road ! However, my initial finding is so vague as to make that mere detail meaningless ! Bayleaf
I don't know if this is any help. It's from a report published by the Friends of the Porter Valley, "Mining and Quarrying in the Porter Valley" by Peter Kennett.

Thanks, Sorry to mislead. I have no info to go on, only what was stated in your post, the + was for the benefit of RichardB, he has a tendency to get lost when he leaves the Town center area. :)

I do, hence the often repeared requests for maps; it's been nearly 30 years and I didn't know where it was when I lived in Sheffield ! I lived (briefly) on Bannerdale Road ... but don't know the district well. Also sorry to have contributed to any confusion.

Guest Mineseeker
Found mention of Button Hill Colliery on the 1st Series OS Map of c1840. Can find no other records of this but still looking. I know it wasn't listed as a working mine in 1880.
WestTinsley
Yes https://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/maps/series?xCenter=3260761.15214&yCenter=3004357.00448&scale=63360&viewScale=181417.4208&mapLayer=nineteenth&subLayer=first_edition&title=Ordnance Survey and Ordnance Survey of Scotland First Series&download=true I believe this is from around 1805. Button Hill Colliery was at the top part of Carter Knowle, Ecclesall Bierlow. Shame there's not so much more info on it..
