Guest JSP
Hello everybody! I know this is a pretty open request but I am looking for any photographs of Orchard Place. More specifically I am trying to find a photo which has William Fisher (horn merchants) house/workshop. Apparently it was a prominent house and a busy workshop. I have found plenty of descriptions, but no photos. I accept this is a big request but I would be very gratefull if anyone can help. I have had a look on PictureSheffield but no such luck! Thanks, JSP
RichardB
EVERARD : The Sheffield and Hallamshire Bank was built on the site of the house below the " Grapes." That was it well-built and respectable-looking house, with palisades ill front. TWISS: It was a house with a fine old staircase, and was at one time the property of the Fisher family, by whom it was 801(1 to the Staceys, who, in turn, sold it for the purposes of the LEONARD:, The grandfather of the present Mr. William Fisher lived there. The house was an extremely good one. Behind it was a productive garden, in which, in addition to the commoner fruits, grapes wore grown upon the walls. Then behind the garden were the horn-pressing works of Mr. Fisher-works still occupied by his descendants, though the trade has changed its character-in Orchard place. By the gates was, as I have been told, a very fine pear tree. After Mr. John Fisher, who died in 1820, his sons, Robert and William. (the latter a fine old politician and reformer, remembered by all of us), occupied the house ; and then, as Mr. TWISS has said, it passed into other hands, although the works remained, And do still remain, the property of the Fisher family. Pears, huh ?
RichardB
A photograph, mmm. Anyone got Pawson & Brailsford's 1862 to hand ? Engraving possiby - just a thought. Leader's Sheffield in the 18th Century might be worth a read for information, available online free somewhere (after I shelled out £18) - Link Fairie opening right here. Guest JSP
I'm going a little off on a tangent here but thanks to your suggestion of "Sheffield in the Eighteenth Century" I found this extract relating to my ancestors Among the earliest of the medical men* is Dr. Thomas Morton, of the Spout House family, who died young in 1675. John Fisher, son of the Vicar evicfled from the Sheffield Parish Church in 1662, and brother of Mrs. Timothy Jollie, senior, was a surgeon here ; and the date of his death, 1685-6 I've been searching for info on this guy for ages, then when your not looking you find it! ta very much! RichardB
Repeat after me : "You can never have too many descriptions" with 307 descriptions of a place, it's always going to be description 319 that contains the one bit of information that gives you a break. Either that or running it by the people on here.

GazzaW
I have just signed up to Sheffield History and as my grandparents lived at 8 Orchard Place from the end of WW2 I was interested to see whether there were any relevant posts. Heres a photo taken about 1920. The Maternity Clinic (later a depot for childrens welfare) is number 8 at the far end on the right. Cutlers Hall in the background. I'm positive there are other images showing more of the street and I will try and source them if you are still interested six years on.
John Russell
I remember in the late '50s, travelling on the 95 tram from Commonside down to West Street (cost 1d child's fare) to pick up cod liver oil and orange juice for my younger sisters from the Orchard Place clinic. I use to love that orange juice and went in there many times to buy as much as they would let me have. It was so different a taste to the orange juice in shops today. Wasn't fussed about the cod liver oil though.
GazzaW
My last stay at 8 Orchard Place was in 1953 prior to our family's emigration to New Zealand. In addition to cod liver oil and orange juice they used to dispense tins of Virol - a delicious malt supplement.
