Very nice photo, although I think the Deltic looks better in the original green livery.

Some more interesting diesel motive power in the area on 29th January, courtesy of Pathfinder Tours' Rother-Don Rambler. Some interesting lines being traversed as well.

2x Class 31's 31190 and 31601, should be as far as Sheffield before more modern traction takes over

They going up the old Manchester line to Deepcar?? brilliant!

If I am reading the itinerary correctly, a Class 60 (pretty rare beasts these days) will be leading to Deepcar, the two class 31s then bringing the train back through to Tinsley South Junction.

The itinerary has to be studied closely as there are a lot of reversals in the Sheffield area. It is also subject to further change: Network Rail are very good at changing railtour timings and routes at short notice.

Wish I was in the area to film it, but I will be at a model railway exhibition in Kendal :(

I think the 1st reversal will be at Beighton Junction, there is a weird run round loop there that is stub (at Rother Valley Park) of the old LD & EC Railway ,

I will most likely pop down to Deepcar with the camera, I take it the times will be up nearer to the date?

was thinking if i picture it at Deepcar would there be time to get by car to Tinsley to capture it there too?

how far in to Tinsley yard would you imagine it getting? to the bridge at Wood lane off Brinsworth Rd perhaps? trying to work out the best veiwing place...

I don's know,

Long time since I'v been down there, 2009 version of Google SV has tracks going under Wood Lane for a couple of hundred yards

What About Carbrook Tram Stop, there's a footbridge there, again years since I've been there to (where have I been for the last few years )

If I was in the area I would probably go to Carbrook or somewhere nearby. Need to see the timings before making a decision about a Deepcar to Tinsley/Carbrook move to film it twice.

I note that confirmed timings are now available for the pick up/set downs, but none of the gen groups has produced the full set of timings yet.

I was on a work experiance scheme run by the Manpower Services Commission working for BR in 1977. I was moved all over the place from Chesterfield to Rotherham and worked with all the different trades on the Railway. Being a railway nut it was a dream come true, but later turned nasty. I knew all about the Class 55 Deltic and always wondered why none came to Sheffield. One day I was chatting to I think it was one of the shunter drivers and somehow the conversion turned round to the topic of why 55's were never seen in Sheffield Midland. And he knew why. One was sent down to Sheffield but it never got there. It came via Rotherham (the old station) but when it hit the curve outside the station going south to Sheffield, it came off the track. He said they never tried it again.

Even back then Sheffield was seen as a backwater for BR and the staff said to me often that they always got the stock from other regions when they got new stock.

Still I learned tuns about the Railway system in 6 months (the length of the scheme) than I ever picked up from being a Railway buff. Including the fact that BR was no such thing. It was still the LMS in Sheffield and I suspect the other big three were still there in those regions they operated. Well at least in the way things were done.
