dunsbyowl1867
"High Wincobank: Sheffield's Garden Suburb High Wincobank is on the north-east side of Sheffield. The Flower Estate gets its name from its streets, which are named after flowers. It is an example of a garden suburb. It is significant because the people who designed it had also worked at the famous garden suburbs of Bournville and Letchworth. Guest old sailor
http://www.picturesh...Glvbj1zZWFyY2g= sad how it turned out, so bad it had to be flattened and start from scratch, bad reputation because of the antics of some of the residents, little Beirut ? Athy
I'd never realised that Sheffield has its own "garden suburb". I must have a thrash through the internet and find out more.
Lysanderix
The early ,exhibition ,houses featured designs for future housing developments. Sadly, the majority of the estate adopted more basic designs but ,nevertheless ,offered the mainly “slum clearance” tenants sound housing, clean water, healthy sanitation, gardens and fresh air! They were provided with a modern school and an Anglican church( St. Hildas). The already existing non denominational chapel was another local facility…but the estate never had a pub until very much later….apart from the Wharncliffe and Horseshoe…which were not on the estate and others down the hill in Grimesthorpe. Whilst the estate has something of a reputation it was a key stage in the Corporations plans for social housing…of which my family was a beneficiary and, deep down, I am still a Sheff5 lad despite having lived in many parts of our City as well as , for a short while, in Canada.
