  1. This is a list of names who went to the House of Help. From 1888 to 1906 Information Given Surname, First name, age, address, date entered, case number Some Address information is missing Title Oakdale House, House of Help for Friendless Women and Girls, Sheffield. AdminHistory The House of Help for Friendless Girls and Young Women and Mission Registry was created by the extension of a Free Registry which was set up in the late 1880s by Mr Arthur Davy as Treasurer and Mrs Phoebe Flather as Honorary Secretary. The Free Registry acted as a contact between potential domestic workers and employers and was funded through donations and subscriptions. The House of Help and Mission Registry was established at 1 Paradise Square, Sheffield in 1885 to offer girls support and training to enable them to secure employment. It was designed to be a residential centre for "Rescue and Preventative Work" and was the first of its kind in Britain. The house was known as 'the Preventative and Rescue Society' but by c. 1890 it was known as the 'House of Help for Friendless Girls and Young Women'. There were set criteria for admittance into the House, although the Committee were allowed powers of discretion in urgent cases. In 1904, in order to be admitted, the following criteria had to be met: "Young Women who have fallen from virtue, and desire to redeem their character." "Young Girls who have lost one or both Parents, or who have parent living, should those parents be of loose character." "Girls of Good Character who are not able to go to situations from want of clothing, are provided with outfits, which are afterwards paid for, by arrangement between the Mistress and the Committee when situations have been procured for them." "Girls coming into town by train, or otherwise, needing temporary lodgings, are received either day or night." "Help is given to Friendless Girls who have recovered from illness in Hospitals, and been compelled to pawn their clothing." The girls and women only stayed at the House until a more suitable arrangement, such as admittance to hospital or a refuge, could be found. The Police Court Missionaries (forerunners of probation officers) worked with the House. Girls were sometimes sent direct from court to the House before being sent to a home which dealt specifically with those who had been charged with dishonesty. Some were sent to the workhouse and while there training placements were found for them. By 1908, the premises at 1 Paradise Square were too small and through fund raising, 17 Paradise Square was bought. The new premises accommodated double the number of beds. In 1940, work at the House temporarily ceased owing to an air-raid which damaged the house. A new house was sought during 1941 and appeals for furniture, money and goods appeared in the local paper. On New Year's Day 1942, the House re-opened at 346 Glossop Road. The lease for this house expired in 1952. A new house was purchased at 148 Broomspring Lane through donations by Mrs J H Doncaster and the J G Graves Charitable Trust. In 1961 a generous legacy was given to the House from the estate of Mr William Cook. This enabled the House to purchase another property at Carterknowle Road. The House of Help closed in 2005. 2. Hi, I'm interested to know if anyone knows any thing about the old mines that use to be at gleadless? I had heard there was one, on gleadless common, near to where the old farm was? Which is now houses. Any information is greatly appreciated :)

  5. Kelly's Directory 1861 Robert Gray & Co., Castle Mills, Blonk Street, cast steel wire drawers and flatteners, hot and cold rollers and manufacturers of every description of steel crinoline. Whites Directory 1864 Robert Gray & Co., crinoline steel manufacturers and wire drawers, Castle Mills, Blonk Street. George Gray & Co., crinoline steel and skirt manufacturers, Pond Hill Works. Extract from The Early History of Stocksbridge and District, by Joseph Kenworthy. 1914. "When steel strips were first employed in the making of crinoline they were wrinkled or corrugated in order to strengthen them and the price was 5/- per Ib. This wrinkling or corrigaton was rendered unnecessary by the development of a proper system of gardening and tempering the material used for this purpose. It is said that the enterprise displayed by Mr. Fox resulted in his firm having netted a sum of not less than £80,000 before the craze (which lasted from 1855 - 1866) died down, which is not improbable when we reflect upon the possibilities that lay in front of such a high price and the imperious demands made by Fashion. This is well brought out in a story that came down to us, which says that, on one occasion when there was full in demand, Mr. Fox with his usual thoughtfulness and foresight kept his men fully employed until there was an accumulation of fifty tons in stock. Mr. Robert Gray (more familiar known as Bobby Gray) of Messrs George Gray & Co., of Sheffield. came to Stocksbridge and offered 3s 6d per Ib, for the lot but Mr. Fox declined to discuss anything less than 3s 9d preferring as he said to keep it a little longer, and eventually Geo Gray & Co. took it at Mr. Fox's price. Fifty tons at 3s 9d per 1Ib = £21,000 Sterling and as the cost price including material, labour and all the other charges could not have been more than 6d per Ib. the net profit on this transaction would be £18,200. Today the same thing can be bought in quite as good steel for the purpose at little more than 3d per 1Ib. Mr. Fox was not a magician, nor the son of one and there could be no suspicion if legerdemain in connection with any of the doings. On the contrary, the transmutation of crinoline steel into gold on his part was affected on pure scientific lines, in other words, by strict business integrity, which is still the best fertiliser of legitimate opportunity. This conceded, the reader will look for what which was to be expected of such a man of the circumstances under review. Whilst the craze was so to speak in retort, Mr. Fox quietly built up a trade in cold rolled steel for pens and many other purposes, which ensured employment for a costly plant when such was no longer occupied in making steel for crinolines. This in itself was a notable achievement, because two or more of the firms engaged in this trade came to grief as anticipated by Mr. Chester man. For instance, W Holdsworth was declared insolvent before 1864 and when the bankrupts' effects were sold, tradition says that Mr. Fox bought all he had so that no-one else should start in the same line. An explanation which does not accord with the fact that Samuel Fox had then secured a position in the trade which practically made him Independent of any serious competition. Further, the little Wire Mill erected by William Beet, near the Old Corn Mill at Deepcar was adapted by Messrs Gray & Co., to the production of crinoline steel and was turning out a considerable tonnage in the early sixties of last century. William Naylor and Alan Smith who lived in two Cottages of good design which had been specially built for their accommodation at the end of Corn Mill Lane, acted as manager and assistant; the works been driven by steam power and lighted by coal gas. Mr. Walton, of Horner House who worked there as a boy of seven years old, informs me that about twenty hands, men and boys were employed in rolling with the attendant processes of annealing and cleaning. Such activity, however was of short duration. Failure in some form or other, overtook the business and Samuel Fox was ultimately left in undisturbed possession of the steel trade of the Little Don Valley."

    Swallows Colliery Mosborough

I’m unsure if Silkstone referred to the seam of coal? Various evidence suggests that the pit shaft was between 146-160m deep - the coal authority suggests the latter. At some point in recent time the Coal Authorities website gave much more detail but now it’s basic in its information. Various sources have said the Moorside Colliery passed through Swallows workings in the early 90’s which may or may not suggest when it was filled in and capped. There is an inspection cover there but I’m afraid I’ve not got the apples to be lifting that up to check if there’s an abyss below...

  8. I can't find if this has been discussed before. Coal Pit Lane, now Cambridge Street. Presumably it was called Coal Pit Lane for a reason (although the 1771 Fairbanks plan gives the alternative Cow Pit Lane). So, where was the coal pit?

A great body of persons calling themselves Chartists, assembled together in Paradise Square, Sheffield, about seven o'clock in the evening, and at that time it was getting dark, and they conducted themselves in a particularly violent and riotous manner. The gas lamps were put out, stones were thrown at he windows, and in short the circumstances were such as to inspire a well founded alarm in the minds of the inhabitants. In consequence of this alarm the magistrates came to the place, the riot act was read, but the crowd not dispersing the military, with Colonel Martin at their head, had been sent for, and stones and brickbats were thrown at the military and the police. The body of persons removed to what is called the Doctor's Field, and the same riotous proceedings went on, some of the military and police being hurt. The town was kept in great agitation the whole night. Robert Cox (33), George Gullimore (18), James Bartholomew (22), Joseph Lingard (17), Thomas Powls (34), and Joshua Clayford were charged with 1, conspiracy; 2, riot; & 3, unlawful assembly. First Coal

Generous Act On Saturday the 18th inst about three o clock in the afternoon a waggon heavily loaded with large and excellent coats drawn by 50 men colliers with a boy sitting on the top waving an emblem of the British flag arrived at the Infirmary Sheffield. Dr Earnest, on enquiring the cause of this proceeding, learnt that these coals were the first taken from the new pit near the canal basin and that they had been sent to this Charity as a present by the Sheffield Coal Company; Messrs Holy, Wilson, Dunn and Co. This generous act and the manner of doing it are well worthy of public attentions and honourable record
  11. FALL IN THE PRICE OF COAL. The demand for house coal at Sheffield is extremely slack, and the agents of several of the collieries have reduced their prices to the extent of from 1s. 6d. to 2s 6d. per ton. The opinion entertained by many agents is that by Spring, fuel will be comparatively cheap. http://www.cultrans.com/
  12. The scheme seems to have originated before the first world war with Albert George and Alfred Christopher Burnett, coal merchants (Burnett Bros & Co, Change Alley) and house builders of Brentwood Road, Nether Edge. This may be the 1905 sale that gave ownership to the Burnetts. The Lawton mentioned was Joe (born 1841 a farmer) and the Coates was Philip a landscaper and gardener (born 1871) : Below are a series of newspaper advertisements which show the progress, and illustrate the difficulties of being a property magnate during wartime. One of the main builders on the estate was George M Taylor, who based himself at 58 Muskoka Drive from 1922. In 1920 he was supplying building materials from 28 Change Alley, the Burnett's Coal Sales Office.

  14. I would be interested to learn something about the coal riots of around 1893, especially those that were connected with the Newton Chambers Collieries in the Chapeltown/High Green area. I especially wonder if the events led to a lot of miners leaving the district and having to move to other pits.

    Old Refuse Lorries

By 1915 the Corker Bottom and Bole Hills tips had gone out of service and the bulk of the city's waste was being processed at Lumley Street (40,000 tons) and Penistone Road (32,000 tons), the remainder being tipped at Renishaw (28,000 tons). By 1920 the main part of the Lumley Street destructor was obsolete, Renishaw was almost full and the Killamarsh tip project would not be ready in time for use. Therefore the Council approved a new method of disposal via a new screening plant for all the city's dry refuse, at Bernard Road. Saleable items such as tins, rags and bones were picked off a moving belt, fine dust was used as fertiliser, fine cinder was mixed with a binding agent to be sold as briquettes for household fires, and large cinder was burnt to drive the plant and charge its electric collection vehicles. The briquettes were only ever in demand during the 1926 coal strike. The plant was in operation until after the second war. By 1919 the Cleansing Department had 12 electric refuse vehicles and by 1926 the number had increased to 71.

  18. One of my family worked as a miner for the Barber Walker Coal Company in the 1920's. Can anyone give me a potted history of the company and what happened to it. For some unknown reason he left mining in 1928 to join up in the army and unfortunately was killed in the air raids on Malta in 1942. Any information about the company would be appreciated. PopT

Tram - Origin of the Name?

I've reconsidered the location of Wood pits / Sheffield Park colliery in 1774, in light of the map below, which was created by Medlicott for his pHD thesis, using John Buddles' plans of 1773 and 1776. It shows the waggonway (annotated as such) which follows (possibly a few yards to the south of) the route of the current Duke street. City Road, as far as the Stafford Road junction, which is where the Duke's Gin Stables were. It always baffled me that there were no mapped coal mines near the Gin Stables, but if they were so old, hence shallow, presumably all traces disappeared over time. I'll edit my previous posts to show my revised thoughts...

    Concord Park and Woolley Wood

Thanks, ponytail, for more pleasant memories of my childhood and early adult years..! Having read the initial entry ,again ,I was reminded of the possibly apocryphal tale my Family told of the First World War anti aircraft gun site on Wincobank Hill .It would seem that having spent dozens of nights manning the guns…with no enemy aerial activity…..on the night the Zeppelins raided the City…the officers were at a Ball in town and the NCOs were skiving and having a drink in a Grimesthorpe pub. As a result ,not a single round was fired at the intruders…there being no one to give the orders to fire! I also remember being shown the site of an unofficial drift mine to extract coal from the hillside ,above the woods ,during the General Strike…and for many years afterwards during the Great Depression.
  21. In a sl worn limp back leather notebook : A unique and interesting item, this is an 1870 manuscript valuation of some coal pits around the Sheffield area, carried out by G B Forster of Backworth, Newcastle on Tyne. On 28 single sided pages, and addressed to Benjamin Huntsman Esq, he says that: In compliance with your request, I have made an examination of your Sheffield Tinsley Collieries and have obtained the necessary information as to the costs of working and sale price to enable me to report on and value the same. The collieries are Sheffield, Tinsley, West Retford. The rest of the lined exercise book is blank. This is a highly detailed valuation by a skilled hand and mind - there ius considerable local detail supporting his calculations, regarding colliery railways and the like, local markets etc. A valuable local history item and also for anyone interested in the history of coal mines. Travel in the 19th century

That's what I thought, as the vessel may or may not have been horse pulled. As you say more comfortable and cheaper and probably safer! Does anybody have an ancestor who worked on the canals in Sheffield? It wouldn't be too long before the railway from Sheffield to Rotherham opened (31st October 1838) although the people of Rotherham weren't happy about having the "undesirables" from Sheffield coming to their town and signed petitions. Then later it would link up with the Derby to Leeds, North Midland Railway (1840) Masbrough Station erected 1844. Changing times. The railways must have been a worrying end for many of the jobs connected to the Coaching Inns and the Canals. Unfortunately that's what progress often does, ruins some who can't or won't adapt and makes money for the new business. The navvies who dug the canals now building railways instead, moving wherever the work was. It's very thought provoking and makes you realise why your ancestors moved and so far from their place of birth. My great grandad Charles Land born 1853 in Derby moved to Leeds 1872 to be first a cleaner (engines) for the Midland Railway, moving to Carlisle, progressing to fireman (to put it simply shovelled the coal on the engine) when the Settle to Carlisle Line opened. Later registered as a driver, working at Kirkby Stephen and Appleby before promotion to "working engines" foreman coming to Sheffield 1897. His father had been a sadler and Charles must have been forward thinking and excited by the railways not to follow his father's work and probably better paid. The coachmen must have been a hardy breed out in all weather's and under stress to keep the coach running to time. Does anybody know if they travelled all the way to the destination or whether they changed drivers as well as horses? How did they keep warm? How did they drive the coach in the dark? ... no lights along the roads! perhaps they drove the route so often they knew every twist and turn. Were they stranded and for how long when something happened to the coach or the horses? How did they deal with those who lay in wait to rob them, was it everyone for themselves or would they protect the passengers? Finding the "Hatched, Matched and Despatched" of ancestors was just the start, finding the working and social history of them intrigues me more.

I have no doubt our Roman ancestors found the distance needed for a horse to go between its shafts was the same as coal owners in the north east found ….and thus standard gauge was adopted by our nascent ,world beating, steam locomotive powered coal trains.🧐

  25. I was doing a bit of family history research and found that in 1851 my great-great-grandfather, William Green, was a coal dealer in Netherthorpe. I took this to mean that he would have used a horse and dray to carry bags of coal from one of the Sheffield collieries to houses in his trading area. It struck me that, since Sheffield, like Rome, is built on seven hills, the poor old horse would have had a bugger of a job once it got away from the level suburbs by the Don. I can vaguely remember "coal holes" and chutes going from the pavement to the cellar, but I can't remember much about horse-drawn stuff (except for the rag-and-bone man). I'd be interested in comments from anyone else who has looked into the subject.
