The railways goods/coal yard or depot on Queen's Road was the home of, or base for, a number of well-known Sheffield coal merchants up to sometime in the late 1950s or early 60s. I can remember W H Hewitt's, Ward & Longbottom's (?), etc. It was a very busy place at one time. Does anyone have any memories of the place? I have searched for some pictures, showing the coal waggons, the coal lorries and the row of coal merchants' offices, but I have never found one. The entrance faced across to Duchess Road (?).

Following is a short extract from 'The Illustrated Guide to Sheffield and the Surrounding District' by Pawson and Brailsford 1879: "The Norfolk Baths are situated in Bramall-lane. The large swimming bath measures 75 feet by 39 feet." Anyone any ideas as to where the baths were located on Bramall Lane?

I would be interested to learn something about the coal riots of around 1893, especially those that were connected with the Newton Chambers Collieries in the Chapeltown/High Green area. I especially wonder if the events led to a lot of miners leaving the district and having to move to other pits.

Bricklayers Arms on Newhall Road and River Don Inn on Brightside Lane
Guest posted a topic in Sheffield Pubs and WMC's
Hi there I am looking for information on a public house called the Bricklayers Arms which was on Newhall Road when my rellie died in 1929. By 1934 his wife was then at the River Don Inn on Brightside Lane and remainded there for a number of years. I'd love to know more about these public houses! Thanks in advance Karen -
Whilst searching for a photo I came across this one, not sure where I got it from so apologies if its been posted before. Pre British Home Store Days and before "Cann, Cann, The Music Man moved to its new shop on Chapel Walk. Much of the lower half of Dixon Lane remains exactly the same including Kings pork shop (wonderful pork sandwiches).

Could Broad Lane and Silver Street have been considered next to each other in 1828 ? I have a Pub (Lincolnshire House with keeper) listed as Silver Street and another with no keeper (Lincolnshire Arms) on Broad Lane; it would be nice to marry the two if we think that would be right.

I was doing a bit of family history research and found that in 1851 my great-great-grandfather, William Green, was a coal dealer in Netherthorpe. I took this to mean that he would have used a horse and dray to carry bags of coal from one of the Sheffield collieries to houses in his trading area. It struck me that, since Sheffield, like Rome, is built on seven hills, the poor old horse would have had a bugger of a job once it got away from the level suburbs by the Don. I can vaguely remember "coal holes" and chutes going from the pavement to the cellar, but I can't remember much about horse-drawn stuff (except for the rag-and-bone man). I'd be interested in comments from anyone else who has looked into the subject.

Came across this photo - even the small remaining stones have more character than the abomination behind!

Opened 18th September 1939 - which was lucky, as on the 3rd of September all cinemas (aswell as school & theatres) had been closed on the declaration of war - only to reopen on the 15th of September!

Has anyone got any information etc on when the housing in that area of Sheffield was built, and by who. The area is private housing and a combination of detached, semi-detached and bungalows. It is quite a large area stretching from Abbey Lane upto the borders with Bradway, inc Westwick Road, Crescent. Old Park Road, Avenue, Cockshutt Road, Crescent etc. Any info would be welcome

Hi all Does anyone have any clue as to the period when the photograph of the old Whitehouses, Bramall Lane, Sheffield, might have been taken. The photograph is located on the Picture Sheffield.com site. http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/pi...ff.refno=s05913 Thanks Leipzig
