Zion Congregational Church, Zion Lane, Attercliffe this building opened 4th February 1863. s04902 Zion is a Hebrew word meaning fortress and was the name given to a hill south west of Jerusalem on which lay older and higher part of the Holy City, the portion often referred to as the 'City of David'. The hill served as a fortress. The Zion whose story we seek ... is no hill with a city on it but a chapel hiding down the dingiest street in all Sheffield. Hidden away at the back right off the main street and only approached by the narrowest of lanes As Canon Sydney Smith used to say 'in all my parishes I have never had a finer or more worthy folk than the people of Attercliffe, but the beggars won't come to Church.'   7. When was the course of the river in the Ponds and the Dixon Lane area covered over ? I'm talking about the stretch from Pond Hill to the junction of the River Don When open to view, were any photos taken ? Remains of the bridge over the river at the bottom of Dixon Lane were discovered when the new building at that location was being constructed. Time wasn't allowed by contractors for a detailed examination, what a shame !

Sheffield Red Book, 1912 (page 207): The Sheffield Boy's Working Home was founded in 1881 to provide a home for boys in a state of physical or moral destitution, the relief of mothers of fatherless children; and to afford a measure of education and give the boys an opportunity of earning an honest livelihood; there is accommodation in the home for 40 boys; there is no workhouse atmosphere about the place, and boys are allowed to visit their friends on Sundays .. the home is supported by subscriptions, and by the earnings of the boys. I’m currently researching the Sheffield to Tinsley Canal, when researching lock 10 Wharf Lane and the surrounding industries I found a post on Sheffield History dated January 2017 by Sheffield History member Lysander. in that post when writing about Tinsley Rolling Mill a mention was made about a tragic accident involving a lorry. I’ve attempted to find a date for this incident and any other information but to no avail. As I’m a new member I can’t message Lysander and would appreciate any information on this matter. Thank you
