  1. Found an old form the other day that was handwritten and tricky to decipher the address, but it says something like Caupes Buildings, Pothouse Lane, Attercliffe. It's from about 1880. I think Pothouse Lane is now Coleridge Road (?), but does anyone know of the "Caupes" Buildings?
  2. Has anybody got a map of Abbey Lane cemetary please..... I have just found out that one of my Willoughby ancesters is buried there. (Can I cancel the above request as I have found a map of Abbey Lane Cemetary on the Sheffield Indexers website.) Edit Also is there a searchable database about Sheffield cemetary occupants in general because there are some relations that I would like to know where they are buried. Thanks in anticipation .....

    38 Granville Lane

Did there used to be a lodging house, hospital or workhouse at 38 Granville Lane? I am researching my family tree and I have found that two members of the family died at this address but I aslo found that there were many others of other families died at this address in the same era. It seemed to house quite a few people at the same time.

    Jehu Lane.

Can anybody tell me the location of Jehu Lane as I am currently arguing over it's location. I have 3 maps stating it was south of the Bull Stake but somebody else is arguing that it ran east of Fitzalan Square. Any help would be appreciated.
  7. In the 1881 census there is a Elshaw b1840 in Sheffield who was a steward. He lived with his wife on Derbyshire Ln. On a online old-map.co.uk map of the area of 1882 there appears to be a Working Mens Club on Derbyshire Ln at Norton Woodseats. I could be wrong, eyes are not what they used to be. Could it be what is now Eyre and Baxters Anybody any ideas
  8. I was in Fulwood village the other day & got to pondering the history of the area of shops in the above area. The southern parade seems to be fairly modern (50s, 60s?) and has a modern block of flats behind them. What was here before the shops were built? Looking at the Co-op building the brick-work of the rear portion seems significantly older than the front bit. Anyone know the history of this building?
  9. I know Ive mentioned this before, but after seeing the site the other day, i thought it would be better under the title " Sheffield places - now gone " I went to have a look at the old ww1 gun site saturday, only to find out most of it has either been bulldozed or filled in, only the circular gun pit still survives intact.....up to now! To get a good idea what the site used to look like, if you go on google earth, look at Manor Cottage Farm, the site is at the side of Manor Lane in between the farm house and the road then use the time line to 2005, the whole area is in a shadow, so all the plateaus, gun pit and other dug outs are clearly visible. im just glad i took plenty of photos of it last year.
  10. Anyone remember the abandoned ornaments/statues/sculptures on the side of Cocksutts Road that leads up to wharncliffe side from oughtibridge? My dad showed me them when I was very small, about 6. This would have been 1995/1996. Where did they come from? Where are they now? There was a lady's head, can't remember the rest, it was aaaages ago.

    The Well Wood Lane Area

I was born 1950 and brought up in Thrush Street, Walkley. From our back yard we had a view over the valley to Stannington. As a kid we had a perfect view to a well just off Wood Lane. It hypnotised me as I had quite a few childerens books where wells ere depicted and this well at wood lane was perfect. Brick or stone built with cranking handle and canopy over the top. Never thought much about it from circa 1958 until I was to start Myers Grove in 1961 as we had moved to Crookesmoor. It was the first thing I looked for on my arrival but it had been demolished. Anyone remember it or shed any light ?

  17. Is there an easy way to find where old streets other than scanning the old maps? Is there an a-z or similar for each or any of the census years? I'm trying to find New George Lane from the 1851 Census (St Mary's Ecclesall Brierlow, Sheffield), but have a number of other roads I could do with finding too. Just thought there might be an a-z somewhere.

    First Coal

Generous Act On Saturday the 18th inst about three o clock in the afternoon a waggon heavily loaded with large and excellent coats drawn by 50 men colliers with a boy sitting on the top waving an emblem of the British flag arrived at the Infirmary Sheffield. Dr Earnest, on enquiring the cause of this proceeding, learnt that these coals were the first taken from the new pit near the canal basin and that they had been sent to this Charity as a present by the Sheffield Coal Company; Messrs Holy, Wilson, Dunn and Co. This generous act and the manner of doing it are well worthy of public attentions and honourable record

    Deep Pit

Can any one help me pinpoint the location of Deep Pit Colliery? (see image). On the Census taken in 1851 my Ancesters are living at Deep Pit Cottage . Regards Southside
  24. Many years ago I was taken down Lightwood Lane in Norton to see a steam locomotive. All I remember was it being in a farm yard and being a small tank engine. As my father had no recolllection of this I was beginning to think I had imagined it all, but a recent purchase suggests that I was not. Listed in Industrial Locomotives 1976 (an Industrial Railway Society publication) is an 0-4-0 Saddle tank built by Nasmyth Wilson of Patricroft in 1894, works number 454, owned by the Nasmyth Wilson Locomotive Preservation Group, Lightwood Farm, Norton. This locomotive spent all it's working life at Brown Bayley's before being acquired for preservation in the early 1970s. It is now at Swanwick Junction at the Midland Railway Centre, disguised as Oswald the Talking Engine, a sad fate for the only standard gauge Nasmyth Wilson locomotive remaining in this country. Does anyone else have any recollection of this locomotive's sojourn on Lightwood Lane? Some photos of the loco I have found on the interweb: In Brown Bayleys colours What the locomotive looks like now
  25. There is a picture in Sheffield Libraries of some old cottages that were next to Bishops House. The photo was dated 1928. Does anyone know when they were demolished? I think they were demolished because of road widening. I know the cottages were originally part of Meersbrook Estate and were rented out by the Shores. I have a 1806 map and rent book to that effect. What I want to know is if I can get any information about the interior of the cottage, any demolition photos?
