  1. I have a problem, I am trying to identify two farms nearly opposite each other on Bingley Lane. Bingley House (O.S. maps) is now at least a farm and looks 19th c to me but I think replaced an older one, I have no idea what was there before, Topside of the lane is Bingley farm (O.S. maps) or Bingley Lane Farm. This was due to be demolished because of a tree problem but not now. It has evidently some great age. I have references to a "...farm on Bingley Lane" 1819 and later stated "... a farm at Bingley House" mentioned 1835. So description inconclusive. I have a Mark and an earlier Charles Dyson (pre 1828, possibly pre 1800) Both cutlers and mentioned in connection with the "Bingley House Trust" - set up to educate the Stannington poor in the 17th c. and associated with Underbank School and chapel. "Revitt, Jonathan, Born Mar 06 1820 in Nether Gate, Stannington, Yorkshire, Died Jun 06 1896 in Bingley House, Stannington" (Tribal page.) There are Beals at Bingley Farm (I reckon) in the 1841 Census, another cutler.not yet found later Census I have been unable to track down any old pics or old maps . Can anyone help please? Mike

    Psalter Lane

"the charity school on psalter lane has had the school part pulled down ....original house kept and new builds on way in similar materials to main house"
  3. I read with some profound amazement that the now disused pub is liable to become a Mosque. A pub has been there on the side of the cross-roads since at least the 1840's and , when I started drinking as a teenager, in the 1960's, it was an extremely busy place and the focus of much community activity. I was told, the other day, that Lillie Langtry and a a certain King would privately meet there ( in a room ...upstairs) on their way to spend weekends at Wentworth! I wonder if there is any truth in the tale?

  5. Hi, I'm interested to know if anyone knows any thing about the old mines that use to be at gleadless? I had heard there was one, on gleadless common, near to where the old farm was? Which is now houses. Any information is greatly appreciated :)

    Mushroom Lane

I was taking a few photos of houses in Mushroom Lane as they would appear to have some age to them. They now belong to the University. One large Victorian Mansion (I think) and an impressive terrace. Can't find any history to these houses. Can anyone tell me their age and who lived their? Are they connected with Dam House?
  7. Found this mentioned briefly in 1855 in Newspaper Article. Don't have exact address. Might this be earlier name for Cricketers Arms?
  8. Can someone help me out with history of this. Listing says built by John Younge but I have a member of Bramall Family. Also says the grounds were used by Sheffield Wednesday in one book. So how far did grounds reach? Was this before Bramall Lane stadium was built? I have a newspaper article saying Bramall formerly of Sheaf House. Was there more than one house called Sheaf House? When did it become an Inn? What's earliest reference to it? Listing date gives it as 1800 but don't think Younge was around there. I know Bramall had a file cutting works but not how far it extended or when it went.
  9. Tuesday I went searching for relatives graves at Abbey Lane Cemetery. I went via Graves Park. The first thing I noticed was a lot of dead trees in the park. Also there were workmen in the woods felling a lot of them as well as taking a lot branches off, back to the trunk. Now if this is to do with the spate of tree killing bugs that are around I don't know. Or it could be to do with general woodland maintenance, creating more light etc for new trees to grow, or a combination of the two! The first image however shows I think wind action, with some afterwards pruning. The chap isn't a woodman, but he does add scale to the picture. Not far away from this fallen tree is the Pack Horse Bridge. Meanwhile the water fowl on the ponds are enjoying the warm weather! The first picture shows a Swan on the island in the lake. While I was taking the Swan a whole bunch of them came up close. so I could get these shots including the youngsters! Ok now to Abbey Lane... As the Sheffield Indexers have the location records for the graves. I marked the ones that I was interested on a map. In section G were 3 Benton's and 1 Appleyard (my Great-Grandfather). And just my luck not one could be found! The reason is that those left have suffered damage and the vast majority in that section are suffered the worse than any other part of the cemetery. C section next to it is better in comparison, but the one Appleyard grave located in is typical of those in G section. The photo below is a good example, it is a distant cousin, of mine, the death of a young child called Sally. As the grave dates to only 1962 I was surprised at the state of it. Clearly too painful an event for my other relatives to keep visiting the grave and correct the damage. So if you have a relative in G section if the grave has survived you will be very lucky! It seems that most of the Appleyard graves (in Sheffield) of my family have been destroyed by either the Council or the elements I was a bit lucky with some of my Benton relations. Clearly the edition of more recent burials has help preserve the grave. And adds some new relations to my tree I did not know about And another grave in fantastic condition and at 103 perhaps one of the oldest people to be buried there Now to some stones that I found interesting, which I know Sheffield History Members will add lots of facts too. Sadly I spent around two hours searching G section that I didn't have time to have a full look around for more! The first came up whilst searching another section for ancestors. Some of the stones are laid flat in the grass, clearing one away I found this little musical gem! Lastly another a family grave recording the loss of a son killed in the First World War. Of course the body is still over there! It's remarkable how these older stones last much better than more recent memorials.

    Bramall Lane

Can anyone please point me at a map of Bramall Lane on here which shows house numbers . I want to see where 208 was & whether it was next to the Ebenezer Wesleyan Reform Chapel (before it was demolished) Thanks, John
  11. I have a very vague memory as a young child of being shown (for all of one minute) some kind of muddy spring between Crosspool and Crookes. This would have been about 1979-1981. It wasn’t until I was a bit older and saw some TV pictures of foreign hot springs in grey mud (I think in New Zealand) that I understood what I had been looking at that day. Is my memory playing tricks on me? If there were hot springs or geysers in Crookes we’d all know about it surely?!! As I recall we were on a school trip to the Headland Road cemetery, when an allotment holder got chatting to our teacher. Some moments later we were invited by the teacher to follow this gentleman through a locked gate into his allotment (which must have adjoined the cemetery – hence me assuming it was in the Marsh Lane allotments, possibly the other cluster nearer Clough Fields, but I think we were near the chapel building when we were led away so I think more likely the former location). The allotment was fenced off with closed boards up to at least 6 ft high so this site wouldn’t be visible to the public; I can’t remember whether, once through the gate, it was the first allotment or whether we has to follow a short path through a couple of others to get to the one in question. I know that I didn’t imagine being told by our teacher that this was a spring, and I can definitely remeber seeing somthing bubbling in the mud. But I’ve never found anything on old maps or heard anyone else mention it, so I wonder if it was more like a fractured drain or something eaually unremarable? I think the idea of it being a steaming hot geothermal spring is my boyhood imagination running away with itself. What is interesting is that the old St Antony’s Well is not that far from here, effectively on the same headland; so there is a precedent for water coming out of the ground in this vicinity.
  12. On the right going down pack horse lane there was 3 rows of huts that were used as housing. These were around in the 1920s & early 30s. When the new housing estate was built ( jeffcock rd / south rd / vickers rd / greno view rd / miles rd / holland rd green gate lane ) at the start of the 1930s. The families in these huts were re housed into them. These huts were knocked down not long after. point on map below

    Rodley Lane

Rodley Lane ran from Leadmill Road to Suffolk Lane. I always assumed that it was named after the Rodley Inn. The earlist trace of the name Rodley Inn seems to be the 1891 Census, however Rodley Lane appears as far back as the 1871 Census. Where did the name Rodley Lane derive from.
  14. I have been researching my family tree in high green & come across a road thats not around any more. Its name is Robin Lane At Mortomley Hill. I have talked to some one who believes it was on the land of mortomley hall. & the access road to it was from the start of jeffcock road. There is still a short access road there but its been blocked off just before the start of mortomley park/greengate lane park. Map Below.
  15. Just saw this on my way past. I asked if the front was being saved but no, it is to be completely flattened.
  16. Does anyone know where they met in Fig Tree Lane? I know 13 was a ladies school but other than that I don't know.
  17. I think the map that I need is SK3487 (maybe) - but the forum search feature doesn't seem to be working. Can anyone suggest where to find it ? TIA. Dave.
  18. Any ideas what this might be ? It is on (or just off) Ronksley Lane at Rivelin. Somewhere around here near the bend Satellite view Spotted it over the wall about half way up on the right. Almost completely overgrown now. It is a concrete dome with as far as I can see no entrance apart from a small brick slot on top. The whole thing is surrounded by (or it seems) clad in a neat stone wall which has partially collapsed on the lower side. A short piece of broken pipe is visible leading in (or out) on the lower side. There is a small stream running down the side of it, but water doesn't appear to go inside at any point. It resembles a pill box, but is far too small and (one would think) completely in the wrong place. Very difficult to get anything like a clear picture because of the trees.
  19. A visit to Green Lane Works and Eagle Works in Kelham just after the site had been cleared of the ancillary buildings. January and February 2012. Please do get in touch in you have any more old photos, or history of the sites. I am trying to compile a historic timeline from the early days of Kelham.
