    Coal Pit Lane

I remember reading recently but can't remember where, that one of the 19th. century Chapels or Churches built in that area had to be built on piles because of the old coal workings under the site. If I come across it again I'll remember this thread....hopefully. Edit: Found the church but it it's too far from Coal Pit lane.... "St. Judes Eldon street, erected in 1849....the site included a partially worked coal mine and the church is reared on 33 stone pillars rising from the bottom of the mine."

I have done a lot of research on Sheffield Park so I can clear up a lot of the name mysteries. Let's start with the Nunnery. In 1291 Waldingwells Nunnery (not far from Worksop) were given lands in Woodhouse, so it's likely they were given land in Sheffield Park from Thomas Furnival. It was a Benedictine order and lived under a rule, which was 'to work is to pray'. Water courses were altered by them, so hence the Kirk Dike, which is the one that flows in Deep Pit. You mention Harrison's Survey, undertaken by John Harrison of South Lopham in Norfolk. The names in it are interesting. The "Plauch" is the area around the building that used to be the Travellers Rest. At the top side of it is marshy ground, and one meaning of that word is marsh! But the plank idea also fits in, as what better way to get over boggy ground! The private path should not be confused with City Road. That is a turnpike road constructed in 1779. The Duke of Norfolk didn't want to pay the fees, so the old path was left. The only bit left is the jennel at the side of the old bakery shop at Manor Top. Other names include Georges Close, named after George Talbot. Stone Hurst, which was a MASSIVE wood that covered most of the Manor, filled with Sandstone rock outcrops. Blacko Plaine, cleared of trees (perhaps the odd one here and there) covered in coal outcrops. Faunsfield is where they kept th young deer. The Cundit Paine was also another cleared area, around where Deep Pits is. The Conduit was Kirk Dyke and was tapped off to supply water to Sheffield Manor. Blacko Plaine was later broken up into four sections around 1699 and in one a "New Stand" was constructed. This was on the site of Stand House School. Another Survey was done in 1685 (ACMS78) which fits a lot of the Fairbank's Map of 1795. Another pathway (using the 1795 map) to Lords Bridge can be traced coming over from Manor Lane, crossing over the stream using the said Lords Bridge, before heading up to what becomes known as Low Farm. In 1685 Edmund Corker held all the fields around the Lords Bridge, which was at the bottom of the hill going to it. So it would become known as Corker Bottoms Lane! Around this time the Duke of Norfolk tried to improve the Park and constructed a new gate, placed around where the Netto Car Park entrance is, which was called the "new intack yate" and is clearly the two posts which can be seen at Richmond, moved by the owner of the farm, as he also had land where they were. Also constructed was a stone wall that still can be seen where the Manor Estate Boot houses used to be. The Manor lane also entered into Attercliffe via a gate, called Marshalls Yate in 1685. Named after Henry Marshall. Manor Lane itself is a much later lane and it would not have been there in Tudor times. Instead two lanes, one to the front of the Manor and one to the rear, were there then. It's also interesting to note that Elm Tree Hill was first called Hutter Hill. I was also able to trace the life of one of the Park Keepers from the 1637 survey. James Wardlow was born 1567 and died in 1662 aged 95! He became the keeper in 1612 aged 45, so was 70 years old when the survey was done. His nephew John Barber said in 1692, that James was told by the Lord to stop anyone using the private path through Sheffield Park, adding that the Intake Gate was always kept locked.

  14. There was indeed a wire mill at Ringinglow though. This is from a Clarion Ramblers' Handbook, 1950/51, and is an account told by Herbert Trotter of Ringinglow. The wire mill was built in 1844, and thee was a date mark on the chimney. The mill was on the right (East side) ar you turn NW along Fulwood Lane, and immediately behind the row of six stone-built cottages, built for the mill workers – two more between them and the Norfolk Arms. It is understood that the mill was started by Robert Cooke of Hathersage (in White’s Directory for 1837), and his son Robert, and came into the possession of a Mr. Broomhead of Hathersage after 1855, when the mill closed down for a time. It was last worked by a Mr George Winterbottom of Barnsley who as manager for Cooke, took it over and a Mr Fieldsend became his partner. Probably about 78 years ago (c. 1876?) there was a strike. The employers and apprentices were working, “but t’gaffers wouldn’t pay t’price and t’warehus got afire. Men thought it worn’t insured, but t’gaffers ‘ad insured it a month afoor, an’ cleared a thaasan’ quid aht o’ t’job” so it was said. (If you need a translation, - The employers and apprentices kept working, but the bosses wouldn’t pay what the men were asking, and as a result the warehouse ‘caught fire’. The men thought it wasn’t insured but the bosses had insured it a month before and made a thousand pounds as a result. ) The firm had obtained coal from Barber Fields drift workings, several hundred yards to the SE and with this or probably other earlier capital they found coal and sunk a 196ft shaft in the mill yard. “Joe” Trotter (Herbert’s uncle) and Sam Millward were colliers, and Hiram Trotter (Herbert’s father) was engineman and John Mills the banksman. Water troubles soon stopped the pit but Hiram Trotter’s great grandson (also Hiram Trotter) tells me that an attempt to drive an underground road to join up with the Barber Fields drift and seam and so increase production and make a two-way trade with lime and coal did not succeed. The shaft at the N end of the yard was ordered to be filled in by the authorities in 1901 after the late Alderman J. R. Wheatley bought the Ringinglow property. The chimney, a local landmark, gradually declined, and a little before 1912 was pulled down to a few feet above ground level, and none remains now. Many years ago, Herbert Trotter took down the lightning conductor an made tooastin forks for nearly ivvreybody i’ Fulwood”. A sough was built to drain the mine, which empties into the porter valley in the area called Hell Bank.

    Help Solve This Mystery..

Just read this, posted by Richard....explains why The Cutlers Company coat of arms are above Edwin Dale's old building. CHAPTER 11 - CUTLERS HALLS AND FEASTS. WE know with certainty of only three Cutlers' Halls. They successively occupied the same site, in Church Street. Their dates are I638, I726, I832. The late Mr. John Holland expressed the belief that there had been a still earlier hall, standing at the top of Coal Pit Lane, where, in his young days, there was a grinding wheel. Any evidence of the existence of such a building is wholly lacking. There was, until recently, an old house, with low mullioned windows, immediately above the Coal Pit Lane Chapel, which had been long in the family of Mr. E. Linley, sheep-shear manufacturer. Around this hovered a tradition that it had once been a Cutlers' Hall, but this was probably based on no more substantial foundation than the circumstance that over its door~say a stone shield bore the initials "J. L. S.," with the cross daggers. And the occurrence of Cutlers' Company insignia on houses in Sheffield and the neighbourhoodÑ whether utilised from older buildings, or carved by Masters or private members of the Company in pride of office or as a sort of trade markÑis too frequent for any special stress to be laid on the fact. From “Schooldays” Chapter 11 – The Cutlers Hall and Feasts http://www.omnesamici.co.uk/MemoriestRELeaderChapter11.html Thank's Richard, this confirms what I thought had happened.

  19. Most people would know that The Moor used to be called South Street, and Cambridge Street used to be known as Coal pit Lane so what was Harvest Lanes original name ? and what did Black Lamb's Lane (a dangerous place to go at night ...) become known as ? So that's one new to old and one old to new. ------------------------------------------- If you remember any of these elsewhere please post a link.
