  2. On behalf of all who have contributed to, or read and enjoyed the Pub-blatherings Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Yes, this really has been going on for 18 months, I/we still wish for this to be the very best it can be; here's a bunch of lists of stuff for you to read whilst digesting your Christmas dinner and watching repeats on TV; many more to come - the really, really important ones are the ones where the keepers are missing/not known. None of this is gospel, feel free to offer corrections, additions, blow raspberries or whatever. IMPORTANT : where it says open, it means we know the place was open in that year and that is the earliest year for which we have a known, named keeper. IT DOES NOT MEAN IT OPENED IN THAT YEAR, if we can find evidence of a named keeper at those premises then the open year goes back in time, maybe consider it as : "Open, earliest named keeper - the pub may well have been opened many years before this date and that is the data that we are really hunting for !" which is quite a long title ! Pictures of Pubs/Clubs/Beerhouses old or new would be gratefully received. Keepers of currently open Pubs most welcome, just read the plate with the name on and post it here. 1821 premises with known keepers for the year 1821 (there may be earlier, there will certainly be later, this is just Pubs with a known keeper. That also means there are plenty of Pubs not on this list which were known to exist in 1821) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name Address Open Closed 1821 Angel 105 South Street, Moor 1821 Leonard Cowley Ball 46 Furnace Hill 1797 1920 Sarah Bibbs Ball 17 Scotland Street (Grindle gate) 1797 George Chapman Ball 3 Norfolk Street 1821 1900 John Bower Ball 20 Hawley Croft 1780 1901 Jonathan Beardshaw Ball Inn 84 Green Lane 1821 Joseph Bray Ball/Ring of Bells in 1854 8 Pea Croft 1795 Samuel Corker Barrel 36 Water Lane (5 Water Lane in 1834) 1796 1898 Francis Chambers Barrel 13 Pond Street 1821 Wm. Crosspool

From the Independent August 28 1847: “In the case of the death of Joseph Finningley, caused by falling into the shaft of a coalpit, at Crosspool, the property of Mr. W. Spooner, it should have been stated that the property is in the occupation of a tenant named Gosney, who removed his working tools only the day before the inquest, and who was under a contract to keep up the fences.” William Gosney had a coal pit at Clough Fields (near Delf House) in 1844 and was the victim of a theft of coal from his pit-hill. There was another Joseph Finningley living at Crosspool – he also was not one of life’s winners… From the Independent December 1 1855: “THE EVILS OF BAD DRAINAGE.—On Tuesday, Mr. Badger, Coroner. held an inquest at the King's Arms, Crosspool, on the body of Hannah Finningley, aged 41 years, wife of Joseph Finningley, cutler, Stephen hill, Upper Hallam. The deceased died on Sunday, of typhus fever. She had lived in one of a cluster of cottages in an elevated situation, which, commanding extensive prospects, might by the exercise of ordinary sanatory precautions, be rendered extremely salubrious. These precautions, however, have been altogether neglected, no provision having been made to carry away the drainage and refuse. In the rear of the houses, consequently, is a bog of filth, emitting an insufferable stench ; added to which are, adjacent to the cottages, privies with open cesspools, in a most neglected condition. ... The deceased was attacked with fever three weeks before her death, and on the 13th inst. her husband called in Mr. Fox, medical botanist….[who prescribed her a] decoction of one kind of herbs to operate upon the nervous system, and of another kind—viz., yarrow, hyssop, and penny royal—to sweat away the fever. He also gave certain directions as to ventilating and purifying the room. On his second visit, be prescribed a botanic mixture, to be taken in addition to the decoction previously ordered and also recommended the use of red Jamaica sarsapariila... The Rev. C. E. Coombe, incumbent of Crookes, on making a pastoral visit, found the woman in a wretched state, and took steps to procure her the attentions of Mr. Knowlton Wilson, the union surgeon for the district. Mr. Wilson attended the deceased daily from the 20th ult., and prescribed for her; but the husband having more faith in medical botany than allopathy, declined to comply with the surgeons directions, and trusted his wife (as also his four children and brother- in-law, who were attacked in turn, and on Tuesday lay in a dangerous state) to the treatment of Mr. Fox. The circumstance of the filth surrounding deceased's dwelling, and the fact that she had died under Mr. Fox’s treatment, led to the matter being brought under the notice of the Coroner, and to the judicial examination. Mr. Wilson deposed to finding the deceased labouring under typhus fever of the worst form. He prescribed both for her and the children, and ordered that deceased take wine freely. He also prescribed a mercurial liniment. The husband would not permit it to he used, and still refused to have it applied to the children. Mr. Wilson considered that the deceased had been deprived of the chance of recovery by not being properly attended to, and that the medicines given by Mr. For were calculated rather to aggravate than allay her symptoms. He could not, however, say that they were the cause of death, for the patient might have died under the best of treatment. He attributed this and other attacks of fever, under which the occupants of the cottages had suffered, to the horrid nuisance adjoining their dwellings. The Jury returned a verdict that deceased had died from typbus fever, resulting from imperfect drainage; and accompanied their verdict with a request. to the Coroner and foreman, (Mr. Marsh, of Pond lane Works,) to take steps for the removal of the nuisance." I think I'd have preferred the herbalist's prescription, rather than the surgeon's recommendation of wine and mercury! I do remember the yard (when it was less grassy) being full of clinker and hard black shale, which given it's heritage is not surprising? Grateful to Steve HB for the link to the 'Industrial Coal and Iron Company', who's pits were also over at Storforth Lane in Chesterfield. That will open up some additional avenues of research and handy they were a listed company, as that means public records, which tend to be more readily archived. I agree with the air raid shelter theory Unitedite Returns, as it's a substantial structure and would probably have withstood anything that Goering's flyboys could have dropped on it? However, if it was built at the same time at the pit, it pre-dated the invention of aircraft by 50 years, so either it was great forward planning, or it was adapted at a later time?! Thanks Gordon for the Grammar school memory. My mum was there and although she never knew it as the "Secco", she was able to make the link too. Back to the research..................

  23. Street scavenging appears to be but imperfectly applied at Sheffield. The streets are partially swept before the shops are open in the morning; consequently, when these are to be cleaned out, the sweepings which are thrown upon the streets remain all day long, to be trodden into a thick greasy crust. Of this we had ocular demonstrations during our long perambulations of almost every street and road in the town. That some scavenage is actually performed, we are convinced, as we get near one of the four great deposit heaps of the Corporation. Proceeding down Victoria Road past the Cattle Market, past the Hide and Skin Market, under a railway arch, past a large open space, with heaps of coal-ash, and cinders, and broken bricks, in front of a row of three-storied houses, with street doors opening into the rooms, and a great ash-pit for all at the end of the row, we arrive at an area of nearly two acres in extent, completely covered by huge hillocks of filth. A special heap in the corner belongs to the Duke of Norfolk, as the sweepings of his Grace's markets and properties are brought here, and upon which children, not pigs, are grovelling, whilst one infant sits playing with offal, and gnawing on a decayed leek... We presently come into High Street. This is the centre of the retail commerce. Here is Whelan & Whitty's cloth hall; there are Levy & Son's commercial buildings, having a façade like that of an East-end theatre; and here is Foster's tailoring establishment; with a fair proportion of hatters, bootmakers, hosiers, silversmiths liberally introduced between them. Like all Sheffield streets it is inconveniently narrow, improving but little in this respect when it takes the name of Fargate. Gray's Exchange drapery establishment, with a lofty arched arcaded entrance and Italian superstructure, was striking enough in its street effect to cause regret that there were not others of equal consideration. The rest of the shops, with perhaps the exception of Mose's large-paned frontage in Mose's usual grandiose style, are poor and dingy; and the full red-bricked antiquated Assay Office might well be included in the latter category. The Cutler's Hall is close; - a heavy Classic building, which may have been thought sufficiently stately when it was first erected, but cannot now be considered to afford adequate accommodation... In Norfolk Row there is a large handsome Decorated Gothic Roman Catholic Chapel, with transepts and spire, the effect of which would be much heightened by the removal of a low dirty little cigar divan, and a still dirtier little vegetable shop, occupying the important corner site into Norfolk Street. This is the boundary line of a parallelogram of rectangular streets in which the principal public institutions, the residences of the medical profession, large and small factories, a brewery, and railway receiving and order warehouses are situated. The same blotchy encrustations on the roads, and the same channels running across the footways, with liquid manure from houses and stables, are too frequent. Chapels are thick upon the ground in this quarter, exceeding for the various dissenting denominations forty in number in all Sheffield... Among ham and beef shops, oyster shops, and cigar divans, next door to a pawnbroker's and at the corner of Workhouse Lane, in West Bar, is the establishment thus eulogised. Like Holder's Music-hall at Birmingham, from small beginnings the proprietor, MR. Youdan, by getting favour of the working men, had been enabled, with the result of their patronage, to erect this building, capable of accommodating 4,000 people. On payment of 6d. the visitor is free to boxes, pit, museums under the pit, and dancing-room under the stage; 4d. admitting him only to the gallery. Entering a lofty saloon, on one side of which is a large, gaudy refreshment stall and tavern bar, we find our way into the so-called Music-hall, which, in construction, is a theatre. It is crammed full of an audience of men, women and children, enveloped in a stifling haze of tobacco smoke. We should have been glad to have found a higher class of entertainment than that afforded by the bill of fare, - 'A female Blondin, double trapeze, globe perche, barrel dancer and clown, highly-trained dogs, bottle and chair performer, tight rope dancing, negro vocalist, and Paddy Carey in Irish character'; and would take this opportunity to impress upon the purveyors of the artisans' amusement the possibility of combining instruction with amusement. Another morning we visit the same locality by daylight, as it lies in our road to ... the reservoirs from which the town is supplied with water. From West Bar Green into which six streets converge, the steep ascent begins which leads into the west country. The long irregular road, first called Tenter Street, is intersected with crofts and alleys which are full of two-storied houses. In these the artisans reside, and in some of them carry on their trade. Old-clothes shops, old furniture shops, the shop of an optician calling himself 'A Blessing to the Aged', rag and bone shops, and petty hucksters, including 'A Co-operative Store', make up a dingy line of thoroughfare. Up Court No.1 a cesspool is being emptied, the contents wheeled out, after 9 o'clock in the morning, into the main street, and thence shovelled into a cart, causing a horrible stench: children newly washed and clean are playing round about the corrupt ashes, dung and slime. In all the courts there is but one huge ash midden, into which the privies in common empty, for all the inhabitants. ... Even in the Dark Ages such a condition of life as is existing in Sheffield would have been deemed 'an oppression by nuisances...' The Builder 'A Further Review of Blots on Sheffield', 5th October, 1861

I remember the row of stone cottages that used to ajoin the Star. I lived just off Luke Lane on what was called "Coal Pit Lane, this was later changed to Aldene Road. The reason behind this was someone who lived on Coal Pit lane had tried to book a holiday somewhere, but when they gave their adddress, they were refused, because it was assumed that they were miners and too common. I was told as a youngster that they campaigned to get the name of the Road changed, so the same thing wouldn't happen again. I gew up in Wadsley when it was a village, it was full of stone cottages, and little shops. Coal Pit Lane/ Aldene Road leads up to Wadsley common where we used to play for hours, only returning home when we were hungry or it started to get dark. Happy memories.

Manor Castle Remains 28Th Sept 2010

BayLeaf and RichardS .... Thanks to both of you for your responses.... It appears that the area at, around and near the Manor included about 7 farms, a colliery and a quarry or two. Out of a total population of 585 persons, the breakdown of 1841 occupations looks like this: 50 Coal Miners 35 Ag Labourers 9 Farmers 9 Cutlers 5 Stone Cutters 4 Butchers 10 Independents (more or less "wealthy" and/or "landed" is my guess) 9 Male Servants 13 Female Servants There were other occupations like "Iron Moulder" and the like, and even an "Engineer" or two, but they were few in number.., like a couple in each category. Based on the 1841 Census, it almost seems as if the area around the Manor was a more or less self-sustaining community of sorts, amounting to something like a virtual stand-alone village unto itself, with the primary "export" (if you like) being Coal. In all, there were 25 "addresses" recorded at, near or around the Manor in 1841, (Enumeration District 18), and many of these places are probably still there today: Manor Cottage Wybourne Farm Cricket Inn Cricket Row Cricket Inn Row Cricket Lane Cricket Farm Farr Houses Nunnery Farm Corker Bottom Hoult Farm Crabtree Farm Low Stand House Park Farm Top Stand House Windy House Deep Pit Deep Pit Cabin Prosect House Manor Farm Castle Yard Manor Manor Castle Yard Manor Lane Manor Wood Colliery Manor Quarry My GGGG-Grands lived at "Castle Yard Manor" (as it was enumerated in the 1841 Census), between 1830 and 184x, and my GGGG-Grandmother died there of TB in January of 1842 (buried in Attercliffe Cem). Somehow, my widowed GGGG-Grandfather and his oldest son, (my GGG-Grandfather, married and living in Brightside), managed to concoct a plan and accumulate enough money in the mid-1840s, and emigrated to the US, in two seperate groups, with all of them being reunited together in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in Nov of 1848. From there, in 1849, they went straight north about 185 miles, into a remote, sparsely populated, rugged and mountainous wilderness in northern PA... Sullivan County specifically, which is where I live today. None of this addresses the nature of my original question as it pertains to how the Manor area was viewed or regarded by the rest of Sheffield, but we're getting there, ...... I ran into a couple long-lost shirt-tail relations here in the States. Neither knows the other, but oddly, both of them told a similar tale regarding impressions or notions that suggested that there was, or might have been, a certain possible unhappiness or reluctance on the part of the GGG-Grandfather's in-laws (the ones living in Brightside) regarding their daughter's marriage to my GGG-GF --- he being the eldest child of the family living at the Manor, i.e., those little hovels plastered against the walls of the ruin itself. In a nutshell, that's it, and I just couldn't help asking if there was any validity at all to the notion or if there is still today a memory of a time when people living at the Manor were basically regarded by everybody else as being "of the lower, less desirable class."
