    Lads by the Line

A friend of mine (Ralph) who grew up like me trainspotting at brightside has been studying the original photo on here for me as I don't live in Sheffield now, and is convinced it is of Brightside. He took photos last week from around the same place but from a higher angle : Here is another: In both the dog leg on the wall can be seen to be the same as the old photo : picturesheffield He interprets the old photo as follows: The tall structures on the far right were erected in the mid fifties and were something to do with the gasworks. Just to their left, the square topped building was a water tower and the wagons below were on a siding that ended with buffers near where we sat trainspotting on the Holywell Rd. The signal gantry and signal box are long gone. The four post gantry is behind the telegraph pole and the signal box can just be seen behind the right arm of the gas lamp, they controled the junction for Treeton. The van is parked at the top of Station Lane which leads down to the Crown Inn on Meadowhall . Hope all this helps . I certainly have wonderful memories of trainspotting there in the 50's. John

    Neepsend

Are there any pictures from the Neepsend area anywhere? I beleive it used to be a really popular community around there at one time. My 3rd Great grandfather was the licencee of 'The Ball inn' 84 Green Lane from 1871 to 1901 at least. 'The Ball' is once again a public house, now a restaurant and wine bar now called 'Milestone' We would love to see pics of it if any still exist from around that time? Can anyone help?

    Pitsmoor

Couldn't find my map of Pitsmoor but have finally worked out what this building was . Old cobbled lane in front Across the road from the Tollbar and hiding behind the modern facarde of Unigraph is the former Pitsmoor Church Day School opened in 1836 with money raised by public subcription and a grant from the 1833 School Bill. Classrooms were given by T.W Watson of Shirecliffe Hall. The school pre-dated ChristChurch by 14 years and for this period served as the venue for worship during this time. The school was temporaily closed because of bombing and was eventually sold for the sum of £3,500. Prior to Unigraph the building was used by Wigfalls as a furniture store.
