    Sunday Dog Walkers

My contributions ....... "Rover" could'nt make it nor could the wife, it was'nt for the want of asking ....... the dog that is. A glimpse of Figtree Lane and just around the corner Wheats Lane
  2. If anyone is passing with Rover the wife and me would like photographs of the following : The Langsett Road Toll-house - just by the traffic lights Campo Lane - any buildings not "set square" to the main Street; any buildings set higher or lower than might be expected. Paradise Square - any of it not covered in cars, specifically No 17 (Q in the Corner), the Central Lamp post with emphasis on the stones around the bottom (if they still exist). Any/all of what is left of New Street/Figtree Lane. East Parade/Virgins Row - St James Row. Old Post Office in Fitzalan Square. Hartshead/Watson's Walk/Meetinghouse Lane. The Third Town Hall (Waingate) Castle Vaults The Mrs has been reading Sheffield History books and we're starting Central. Many Thanks (in advance). I did say we were starting Central !

    Sheffield Cafe's Of The Past

Memory says: Joe's Cafe in the 70's had "wallpaper" made up of a picture from the Lake district ( Tarn Hows?) that went all round the room. When Joe's migrated to William Street in Broomhall started going to Butlers on Broad Lane. Can I trust Memory?
  4. Dont worry too much...keep in mind my Thirty Year rule. It would seem that every now and then the people who know best (I use that phrase very loosely) at Sheffield City Council get rid of something that we have paid for...then thirty years or so later pay to have it back. The trams went in the 1960's but by the 90's were back....and the power station that the towers served went in the 1970's and they are now building another. I reckon that if this works out, my thirty year rule, some time in 2020 some bright young thing will propose an underpass in the middle of a road somewhere with a large hole in it to let light in.....or maybe some tower blocks near Norfolk Park or in Jordanthorpe. Its not all daft though. Before they spend all our money on new things they always get rid of stuff we've already bought so looking into my crystal balls (Stop laughing you at the back) I can also see that the council will rebuild Woodseats and get rid of that rediculous bus lane they spent a fortune on. The round-about outside the Midland Station will be rebuilt for the 473rd time and they will remove that Chineese Steel wall so it can be replaced with a sculpture made of Russian Steel instead. To get the Russian sculpture in to place they will have to knock part of the steel works at Tinsley down but such is life. The new market area planned for the Moor will be knocked down and rebuilt on the site of the old Castle Market and the Wicker will be opened up to traffic again after they have removed Derick Dooley Way. Thats enough ranting for now I think. Glad I live in Rotherham!!

    Cotton Mill Road

There's a similar name sign on Whiteley Wood Road facing the top of Ivy Cottage Lane, but it can't be more than 96 years old as it only got that name in 1912, it was previously Meadow Lane.

  11. Era 1814. There were no buildings in Green Lane except the Stove Grate Manufactory, now Hooles, Then came a few cottages , and after that Green Lane Wheel, where Messers Dixon's Works now stand. There were no houses on Meadow Street , beyond where my master lived - except Hoyles house, from which a road went to Shalesmoor called Coachgate. About that time a man named Hinchcliffe , who kept the Greyhound Inn near Copper Street , was l believe, the only constable in Sheffield, then Jerry Senior and after Mr Waterfall who is known as Longfoot who kept the Public House in Smithfield called the LEG OF MUTTON AND TRIMMINGS. Waterfall had a son named Bill who frequently paid my halfpenny fine to go play truant with him when we went to Lancastrian School, Bill afterwards became the Manager of the Sheffield and Rotherham Bank, and after the Sheffield Waterworks Co. The next building up the river was the Nelly Wheel built on Nelly Island across which Rutland Road now stands there was a ford with stepping stones which led to the Neepend Tavern. [ He writes re; BEEHIVE HOTEL] when West Street was made it cut through a garden to a cottage owned by a shoemaker, to compensate the owner they built him the BEEHIVE HOTEL [This snippet is from his Reminiscences just before he died in 1898]. Skeets.
