  3. A few shots from the pit scene but I've no idea where this one is - can you help? Do you recognise this pit? If so post below and let me know! 👇
  4. Built in the 1820s, shortly after demolished to make way for the rather ugly Charter Square; wall mounted gas lamp, no entrance at all to the pub !!! "Hey Bert, how do we get into this boozer ?" "Down the alley at the side you idiot !" Roberts Brothers store (awaiting the move to their new place on the Moor)
  5. THE FULL MONTY FILMING LOCATIONS SHEFFIELD - BACON LANE AND SHEFFIELD CANAL SCENE Here are a few Full Monty Sheffield Film Locations, and in this one here are stills from The Full Monty opening scene down on the canal at Bacon Lane The lads get stuck on a car as they're trying to steal a steel girder to help pay the child maintenance fees Funny scene and sets the scene well for things to come later in the movie. The Full Monty filming locations have changed a lot since the movie was made but you can still visit them and get an idea of what it was like This film location has changed mostly due to the factories being flattened (kind of the theme of the film!) Anyone know what factories have gone and what they produced?
  6. My Dad having been demobbed from the RAF quickly returned to his old job with ESC and since children were allowed in their sports club, providing they were with parents I spent hours there….Mum and Dad had a drink of beer and I had a Vimto . As they had a dance on Saturday evenings I learned to dance there, play snooker and ,in summer ,enjoyed the extensive playing fields with tennis ,bowls and acres of football, rugby and cricket pitches. Competitive athletics took place at their annual Gala Day which was a big local event with side shows ,ice cream and all the fun of the fair. Other steel companies had their clubs….Sadly, I think they have all now gone but ESC was an important part of my childhood.
  7. One of the When Saturday Comes Filming locations right at the heart of the story in When Saturday Comes is of course Bramall Lane home of Sheffield United Football Club that Jimmy Muir dreams of playing for Here are the shots of him turning up for his first trial with the club and arriving at the players entrance
  8. Retirement brings on many extramural activities and having nearly completed my bucket list before the next bucket I see is the one I kick, I thought it prudent to see who's left out of my old class and where and WHO they are now ( many of the girls will obviously have a change of name ).. See link below http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;m00003 A few of our motley crew, I have sincerely missed since I left and I curiously would like to see how we all did after Smiley's J4 class and the ensuing 11+ dispersal. If you haven't sussed yet which one I am in the group,,, go top row and remember the one that went off to Canada at an early age from Fairthorn road.. Came back a few times too but never really got to be in contact with the old class.. I know about Beryl thanks and was recently chatting to Chris ( who hasn't changed a bit and is still a grumpy old bugger and I luv him to bits ) .. Particularly would like to hear from Gwenda who lived on the corner of Rolleston road and Sicey avenue. ( Last time our eyes met was when I came past the house, with my parents in tow, aged then? About 14 /15 ).. Look forward to your responses.
  9. Above the building (now Broncos) on the corner of West Street and Carver Lane there is a monogram S1B (?). I am sure that it is blinding obvious but ... please enlighten me. It is the "1" that is throwing me. Thanks
  10. Looking for as much information as possible about Button Lane in Sheffield City Centre. The shops, businesses, houses there and as many photographs as possible!
  11. Hi can any point me in the right direction to find photos/maps of Mushroom Lane in the 1940s/50s. I'm aware there's sites which show insurance plans but not sure which sites. I'm interested in no 152. Thanks in advance
  12. Hi I’m doing some research into my family history and wondered if anyone has any information on the “George and Dragon” that used to stand at 93 Broad Lane. I believe it operated as a pub between 1825 and 1958. The building was later demolished and the site where it stood now seems to be a car-park. My family connection is that in about 1903 it was taken over by my Great-Great-Aunt Norah and her husband Thomas Crosby (they had previously run the ‘Union’ around the corner on Scotland Street) Thomas died in 1906 and Norah was remarried to a man named John Gaffey, John died around 1918 so Norah then ran the pub with her daughter Eileen. Norah died in 1942, at which point Eileen ran it herself until it closed in 1958. Norah was from Glenamaddy in Co. Galway and “Gaffey’s” as it was generally known was always considered to be an ‘Irish pub' and I believe there was a back room where they had Irish music and dancing My dad would be taken there as a young boy by his father and remembers Norah as a very ‘large’ and somewhat intimidating lady who’s fingers were always adorned with several big rings. I’ve attached a photo of Norah and Eileen, Norah is second from left and her daughter Eileen is on the right. If anyone has any info, memories or photographs of ‘Gaffey’s (or indeed the Union on Scotland St.) it would be much appreciated. Mike O’Farrell

    Coal pit Lane

As most of my family appear to have lived around what is now Upperthorpe, Netherthorpe, through to the town centre along Solly Street and Townhead Street, I was hoping to find Coalpit Lane near there as I have a branch of my family living there. I know roads ‘disappear’ over time and wondered which map I should look at to see if there ever existed Coalpit Lane in this area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Cadman Lane

Thought i`d have a look on Google Earth at the exact location of Cadman Street to get an idea of the area in tozzins enquiry! by mistake i searched Cadman Lane, which took me to the lane behind the Graduate Pub on Surrey Street, i was intrigued by the brickwork on the rear of the pub, can anyone tell me if this is an extension to the building or is it part of the original building? A couple of photographs, one from Google Earth showing the brickwork and one from Bing Maps showing the buildings location.
  18. Any info on the house or the gate house please ? I know it was a Naval Cadette training base , where has the old boforse gun gone?, but has it past naval links, who built it and when ? Also the playing fields in front of it , what are they built on i.e. gardens or the remains of mine workings, as I have seen large issues of water spring up from the bank sides in front of the old wood at the side, after very heavy rain fall.
  19. Does anyone remember the people in this photo? One is Big Ada from the old market on Dixon Lane Any memories of these people at all?
  20. Hi does anyone have any information about a location known as Crooked Steps? It is shows as an ancestors address in the 1881 Census and listed as Harvest Lane. I've checked out Picture Sheffield but couldn't find any pics specifically listed as Crooked Steps. I know it was/is hilly around there so I'm guessing there literally were a set of crooked steps, it just seems odd to have as an address. Thanks in advance!
  21. I'm interested in Harmer Lane at the minute and finding information quite difficult to find. Does anyone know when the area was demolished? Any information would be gratefully received. Thank you
