  1. ....just thought i'd mention that the old Vineys Shop premises , which is now a private home is currently up for sale ! This place used to be a well known and invaluble place for the locals and was open daily till 10pm , till its closure around the mid 80's. Although i popped in reguarly , i can still remember the old Dad who helped out , and Mike Viney , one of two sons, who always wore a jumper or t-shirt with the Blades logo on , and how the building was painted red and white as they were all big Blades fans ! I also remember it being one of the first shops to sell the new "Slush Puppie" ice drinks in the late 70's. Heres the ad .... http://bit.ly/fWEv7g

  3. http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s13708&pos=1&action=zoom&id=16566 The shop on the right was Jack archer's, as kids we often went in for footy boots and kit. It would have stood across from where the petrol station is now on Bramall lane. I can also recall they repaired air guns and rifles. I was told he also provided uniteds kit? Does anyone know the history behind the shop and owner?

  6. I am trying to find out when my ancestor Thomas Glossop lived at the Sheffield Boys Working Home in Broomspring Lane Sheffield circa 1897. I know he started working at Warby's Grocers in 1898 and was in the home before then but do not know when. Are there any way I can see a list of the boys living there, were registers or records kept, or even annual reports and are they still available? Help would be appreciated either ingformation or advice. PopT

  9. Hiya I've been into town today to look round some old ancestral buildings(not that i found much!) and so have a few questions about the places i went, hope someone knows. These are places where my ancestors, the Wilds, either lived or worked. They were Cutlery manufacturers(mainly pen and pocket knifes). Firstly Scotland Street. In 1834 Ebenezer and Benjamin Wild were working from 12 Scotland Street. Now i found a 12 Scotland street but it was a chapel and according to the inscribed stone it has been since 1828. Not sure what it was called but it is dedicated to Littlewood? Anyone have any ideas? Morpeth Street - My uncle used to live at number 82. It is, and looks like it always has been, industrial? Does anyone know if there used to be house there? Wheeldon lane. It's on Google maps and i found what i thought was this but it wasn't a road as such cause it had concrete bollards blocking the entrance. I was looking for Wheeldon Works which was on there, just off broad lane but it look like something to do with the University and just led me to Solly Street. Thanks for any info Cath x

  23. Wincobank Picture Palace, Merton Lane. - http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/zo...jpgh/s21397.jpg The Wincobank Picture Palace opened in June 1914. Of brick construction, the frontage was of terracotta with stone facings. Steep steps led up to an entrance with a mosiac tiled floor. Seating capacity was 550. The projection room was at first floor level and housed a single Butcher's No.12 projector which was hand cranked. Unusually, electricity for lighting was provided by a gas engine, as mains electricity was not available until 1921. Some alterations and improvements were made in 1919 which included redecoration, but it was to be some seven years before the Palace was closed for two weeks during which time a balcony was added and the pay-box was repositioned. Refurbishment and redecoration was also carried out at this time. The addition of the balcony increased the seating capacity by around 100. By the mid 1920s, musical accompaniment was being provided by a trio of, a pianist, violinist and either a trumpeter or drummer. In 1930, a Western Electric sound system was installed for the changeover to talkies. The Palace was normally closed for the last week in July to allow for staff holidays at a time when business was slack due to the Sheffield 'works weeks' holidays. In August 1953 the hall was closed for a week to allow for modernisation work. This included re-modeling the proscenium arch, improvements to lighting and ventilation, and the installation of a modern pay-box. The first film in CinemaScope, "The Robe" * was screened in March of 1955. The Palace closed in February 1960 having seen it's sister theatre, the Tinsley Palace, close just 12 months earlier. Review of The Robe from IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046247/ Info: Sheffield Cinemas.
